We're discussing 11/02/08 Port Washington L.I.R.R. drill
This morning the Port Washington F.D. conducted a drill at the Port Washington L.I.R.R. train station. Fire Com. toned out P.W.F.D., at approximately 0805 hours, for a (Signal 38) call reporting a car V.S. train accident. P.W.F.D. units responded and found smoke showing from a passenger train with multiple aided (all simulated and part of the drill). Numerous various agencies responded to take part in the drill and coordinated there efforts and resources.
The following F.D.'s provided Mutual aid:
Albertson, East Williston, Great Neck Alerts, Great Neck Vigilants, Plandome, Williston Park, Manhasset-Lakeville, Roslyn and Glenwood.
All agencies and F.D.'s did a great job and worked well together. P.W.F.D. did a great job setting up, hosting and conducting the drill. Job well done.

Thanks to Port for hosting, the LIRR and MTA, all the other agencies who were there, and especially the juniors from Port Washington and Great Neck Alerts for playing victims.

They did use the train station. Power was shut off. One train was used. Truck companies made entry and searched. Charged hand lines were stretched up the platform and brought into the train cars. No water was thrown though. E.M.S. triaged, treated and transported patients. The M.T.A. was there to coordinate operations with F.D. and other agencies

I've got to say that it was a great experience to work an incident under NIMS, and see how it plays out, how the whole operation runs. There were obviously some things that didn't go exactly as they should, but that's the point of a drill. I know I learned a lot, and had a good time. For instance, I have never worked an MCI before at which we have had to return to the scene to take more aided after bringing our first patients to the hospital, so it was helpful to see how that works. Haha also thanks to Port for providing lunch during the critique. Much appreciated, and it was, as always, a pleasure to get to work with our brothers and sisters from all around the area.

it was alot of fun, i was one of the first truck teams in, and never doing a search in a train it was a good experience, and after the event we got to talk to the MTA FM about the incident.
also a shout out to Mitch u always make the victims look real. which helps make it seem more realistic.

Well at least it would have been the right hospital to have a heart attack in

Thread gets replies each and every day after the drill ... a pro-active person mentions probably the MOST realistic scenario and the thread goes silent for 3 days.
Maybe there has not been a "man under" or a "person between the platform and the train car" scenario drill because it's just not fun or exciting? Maybe the MTA just does not want us volleys on the tracks - training to be able to operate on the tracks when the power is still on? Maybe no one watches News 12 and is not aware of the dozen or so "man under's" in the past year?

You need to know facts before you why didnt we do something.
1. This drill is a mandate for the MTA.
2. We also included St Francis and North Shore. Their ER's did not know about the MCI drill. The hospitals wanted it that way. They also used the drill as a state mandate.
3. We wanted to include a Battalion wide drill where everyone had something to do.
4. it had to involve many agencies and a lot of EMS.
5. I wanted to do a man under as part of the drill, however it was not pratical as part of this drill with 200 rescuers and 30 victims on the train.
All in all what we wanted to get done, got done. Very well too I might add. Thanks to all who participated.

Port doesnt have a railroad crossing...We are the end of the line so what we would encounter might be a little different. Im not even gonna get into the what if we did this ...or why didnt you do this...because that is called MONDAY MORNING QUARTERBACKING...and it is of no use to anyone.
Sundowner: The drill was toned out as a regular call but we had the m/a set up at a staging area in Port. This was due to the fact that the last time we did this drill 10 years ago, all m/a had to respond in from their town and by the time they arrived there was nothing left to do. The whole point of the drill was to achieve certain goals. It was decided that the best way to do it was to have everyone close by and send them in as Firecom notified that partiular department. However, the scenario itself was kept to the higher ups so the personnel on the rigs did not know what they were going to be faced with. It was a very good drill. A lot was learned and I think everyone took something away from it.
