Default 12-Lead EKG's              Go to Top

How many people here have the ability to take a 12-Lead? Actually take the 12-Lead? Know how to read them? For some reason I feel that there are more people in Nassau that can take them but dont, it seems like a very under used tool that makes a very big difference in patient care and hospital choice.

Most department run with LifePack 12s, and nearly all FDs and VACs in Nassau County have Paramedics that can read 12 leads. I know quite a few EMT-CCs who also know 12 lead EKG like the back of there hand, but they are also RNs and PAs.

My dept has 12 lead. I use it regularly. We also have the capabilities of sending it to Med Com who in turns faxes it to the receiving hospital, all via computer. I have a zoll at work which has worked very well. At first, I was taking them and giving em to the ER doc, but after taking a 12L class it is so much more apparent their benefit.

Too bad 12 lead is not utilized enough. 12 lead is a tool that can be used to get a much more in depth view of the heart than the regular 3 or 4 lead EKG can see. Most monitors now have the capability to do it, too bad they don't have 12 lead classes in nassau that often.

i couldnt agree more, with the fact that 12 leads arent used enough. people just dont realize how much time it could save for the pt to get thrombolytic therapy. im not sure if your familiar with the NYC protocols at all, but we have a protocol just for MI, saying that if a 12 lead shows elevations or depressions, you are to go straight to a STEMI center ( ST elevation MI). IT pretty much bipasses the ER almost and gets the pt into the Cath lab immediatly. I wish we had that here in the island. Remember time is Muscle!
