Ok everyone, Im sure this is gonna be sore spot, but, this is a serious question and probably only current chiefs, ex chiefs and past and present commissioners can answer this:
What is your depts policy on chiefs or assts responding to alarms in your district from say 30 minutes away ?( Lights and sirens from the next county ) I really dont want to get too specific, but, the next county for a b.s. house fire ? comeon, your not making it from Nassau to Suffolk in rush hour traffic. By the way, without the rush hour traffic, the trip would take about 15 minutes.
Hmmm....if you are really that concerned....I'd express it directly to that particular chief. Of course, I am assuming he/she is "your" chief. If your not a member of the same department, then it's basically a matter for the department/district that he/she is a chief at to handle the situation.....IF something needs to be handled.
Ya just gotta make sure you're own house is clean....before you worry about how someone else cleans theirs.
On a side note, at the department I worked at...before my current one.....we covered roughly 56 square miles. Yeah.....long response times....depending on your position.....were sometimes not that uncommon for the Batt. Chief or above.
1st, the chief in question was out of his county, 2nd, Im not gonna track down this chief unless of course he pops on this rant. 56 miles, sorry, this isnt Seattle, it works just a bit differently here on Long Island.
Honestly I personally dont have a problem with it provided that a level head was used. A Chief's place is at the fireground. How is he to know what type of fireload the building has? Mind you I say this as only a firefighter not as anyone with any kind of sway or authority. This is MY OPINION
listen, if your not gonna persue this.. then drop it. There are all sorts of vehicles with lights and sirens racing down the streets, parkways all day and night. If the individual did something to you (or your family), then you should contact or write a letter of complaint. Here is NOT the place for the pissing match.
Its not a matter of a pissing match, its about common sense and responsibility, besides the fact I did witness the chief and so did civilians who asked questions about why a chief from Suffolk County would be driving lights and sirens through Nassau County. If it was an unmarked vehicle, it would be a differant story, unfortunately, the chiefs car was marked in Bright Big letters.
I say it happens everywhere. I seen FDNY Chief going lights and sirens down Penninsula Blvd somewhere in the 4th Batt. ( not going to mention the town) and then you see us vollies using our blue lights responding to a call when we are a few towns away which we cannot do legally.
Maybe there is a State Law written somewhere allowing Chiefs to use lights and sirens responding to an alarm when your 30 minutes away or more.
Come on...................some of these posts never cease to amase me. Most chief's use very good judgement in determining whether or not to respond given where they are, the time of day, and what type of call has been dispatched. What's the problem??

i agree whats the problem, we or whoever' company it is voted that person in and trusts that persons ability to make big decisions and big judgment calls, maybe you should call said person and ask them what the deal was bc as the one asking why, do you know what that chief was doing/type of call/real reason to respond? maybe you are right maybe he had no reason to do this maybe hes just a very dedicated chief and wanted to be on the run to assist him members, wont know unless you ask the chief, so not to start a fight but i really dont think it should have come here first
Well, then whoever voted for the chief isnt too bright. Someone already mentioned about vollys responding with blue lites from outside their district, and thats against the law, but, a chief who isnt on a mutual aid can. brilliant call, you still dont get it..Lock this thread.

Against what law???? I don't remember seeing that written anywhere. What if it was a family emergency???? Again you should find out all the facts before you start to tell people that they are wrong for doing something. I'll tell you if I was a chief and something happened to my family and I needed to get home fast, I would consider using my lights.
I do not recall reading anywhere that it is "illegal" to respond from outside the district using a blue light. If you are ging on/to a call, how is it "illegal"....
I do not believe that NYS VTL says anything about where you are responding from, just that you can only use the light while responding to a call.

I can't help but get the feeling that you started this thread to point out a specific person. It seems to be going against you. It backfired in otherwords. Why do you now want the thread locked. This is not the place to bring up grudges that you may or may not have. Hell you said whoever voted for this chief isn't too bright. Grind your ax elsewhere.
Sounds like a baby chief eager to respond to a fire in the chiefs truck, but a bs fire may have been the outcome, but when they put the 10 out, who's to know?? Circumstances are different in every case.. C'mon, you know what guys do when a working fire is toned out
