I was hoping that somebody could give me some advice and information regarding entrance into the FDNY EMT force. Im currently planning on moving to New York City in December, yet I have no EMT certification.
While I have visited the FDNY website and called some of the phone numbers I am still unclear on many things.
I would like to know:
1) What the best way to go about getting a certification and a job with the department is?
2) How long the current waiting time it is from application to hiring?
3) How the hiring process functions in general?
Any advice and information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
the way I got my certification was with a college, the wait time is not as long as it used to be so I hear but its can go anywhere between 2 months to 9 months the physical is really easy paperwork is all bout doing exactly what they asked for psych is 600+ questions and medical I haven't done yet will let you know how that I'd once I do it
Hope I helped any questions u want to ask I could try to answer
Yes You Have To Get your emt cemrtification first.....try looking in the chie newspaper for place to go or any college should have a program or you could join a volly and theyll pick up the tab.....as for fdny ems get ur emt first then fill out the app. go for the physical and youll recieve 2 packets 1 of them is on how to fill the other one out followed by investigation psych all that good stuff...and even when u get your cert. and get in the academy you will hvae to retake the state test because fdny teaches you there way on top of the state way to learn there protocols etc. once you get in good luck and do your best and deffinatley dont fail EVOC or theyll can you. The acadamey is located in bayside at fort totten army base w/ esu in the back off the cross island parkway. Oh and the physical fitness Lieut. is a realk hard on so watch what u say. Good Luck
Advice, STAY FAR AWAY from the FDNY EMS system. It is broken beyond repair. The salary is crap, the working conditions is crap, the senior management is crap, basically it is a BIG $H*T Sandwich, and every employee has to take a bite.
The Rubber dummies killed that job, run away, run away.
Wow sig. 21 if that didn't scare him, I don't know what will.. On the other hand, fd ems is the best way in my opinion to become a nyc firefighter, and that's what most people do it for in the first place. To take the promotional exam, and sneak in the back door. But as a career choice, as previously stated, it might not be a good idea. Also a emt cert class ranges anywhere from 6 to 800 dollars, or college classes might take care of it, but if you join a volunteer departments ambulance bureau the cost to you is free. Choose well. May the force be with you
up until recently you did have to be an EMT to be hired by FDNY EMS, now they are running a cadet program, although the pay is minimum wage it will get you your EMT card and guarantee you a spot in the TOP class.
yes the pay sucks, but the experience is good, you can become a medic for pretty much free, and you can always leave or take the promotion to firefighter. i will PM you the number to call and who to ask for

Does anybody have any information on getting alternative employment with a private ambulance service or hospital to pay the bills while I wait to hear back from the FDNY? Such as:
1)pay rates
2)working conditions
3)Ease of finding work
Thanks again.
ypu folks on these maeeage boards are great
also, how much does the civil serive exam help in getting employment with the FDNY EMS. as far as hiring times go<'
Amr Has A Few More Rules But They Look Much Better On Resumes Then Lifestar. I Worked For Both Also....Amr Has much Better Ambulances Ratheer Than Lifestars Piece Of Craps With 300,000 + Miles.

Savages that absolutely don't need an ambulance, will get not only an ambulance, but a Cop Car, CFR-D Engine, BLS and ALS ambulance, because they have finger pain, but have a cardiac history from 20 years ago. Meanwhile, the motorcycle trauma has to wait 19 minutes for a bus from the Bronx to get assigned to Manhattan. Yeah, great system there. God forbid you RMA these people,or you don't take them to THEY'RE hospital with they're mastercaid card, and it's your job. When you work in the NYC 911 system, all you are is a taxi driver with a medical education. FDNY is even worse. Mandation, Stupid Bosses, Bosses that are Bosses to get off the streets, Chiefs that think they're the end all to end all, and know it alls of nothing, some of the most DUMBEST and LAZIEST Dispatchers who want you to do they're job for them most of the time, and EMT's and Medics, that shouldnt be allowed to EVEN PLAY this in a game format.. Yep. Welcome to FDNY and the NYC 911 System. Do yourself a favor and work for the privates or go upstate.
