Albany student from LI dies after shootingGo to Top
A University at Albany student originally from Wantagh died Tuesday from a gunshot wound he sustained to the head as he walked near his off-campus home, a police spokesman told Newsday.Detectives are investigating why Richard Bailey, 22, a University at Albany senior, was shot Monday night, and they have not figured out a motive for the crime, an Albany police spokesman, Det. James Miller, said Tuesday.
"Right now everything is being looked at, and nothing's being discounted," Miller said.
Detectives haven't found any witnesses who saw the shooter or shooters, or who saw the gunfire.
Bailey was walking alone around 11:20 p.m. on South Lake Avenue and Yates Street, blocks from his off-campus house, when he was hit once with a bullet.
A passing motorist heard the shooting.
"She heard the shot fired, she looked over, saw him on the ground and she called 911," Miller said. "When officers got there, he was unresponsive."
The student was taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital, where he died.
The student's family has traveled to Albany, Miller said.
Karl Luntta, a spokesman for the upstate State University of New York campus, confirmed Tuesday morning that the person shot was a student at the college. He declined to provide more information about the student.
Bailey, who had lived at 560 Park Ave. in Albany, was pronounced dead shortly after 1 p.m. after being taken off life support, police said.
Bailey's family had traveled from Long Island immediately after the shooting, police said.
Authorities have scheduled an autopsy for Tuesday afternoon.
Police are seeking two men seen riding bikes near the shooting area. While they are not suspects, detectives hope to find out if they saw anything.
The neighborhood where Bailey was mortally wounded has a mix of students and city residents living there. It's several blocks from SUNY's downtown campus and several miles from the school's main campus, authorities said.

I'm a student here and I live about 3 block down from where this happened. It's crazy. Last night there were a ton of cop cars in the area, but this isn't the first time something like this has happened. It seems like every weekend you hear of students getting mugged, cars getting broken into, and now a murder of a student. Albany's 9th murder of the year and it was no more than a few blocks from the closest police station!
When is anything going to change in this city? It's a shame that this happened, hopefully it'll change something.

A real tradegy, odds are he probably gave the mutt trying to rob him a run for his money and was getting the upper hand on him so the coward shot him...RIP, sorry about the loss of your friend fellas.

I am a student in Albany as well, living in the 'student ghetto' for several years now. This tragedy was actually on the outskirts of the student section, two blocks from where I live. Last night I saw the increased amount of police officers in the 'bar' area but how long is that actually going to last? Students here are scared, it has come up in all of my classes. The schools in the area (Ualbany, Saint Rose, Sage, Albany Med) are not doing enough when it comes to notifying students about crimes in the Pine Hills neighborhood. Anyone who ever traveled to Albany knows about the student section and what goes on within it; hundreds of Long Island students live in it. Excellent colleges just in the wrong location.
My heart goes out to everyone that knows Rick, it is a horrible story. Rest in Peace.
