New Hyde Park firefighter hurt in park mishap
BY SOPHIA CHANG
11:48 AM EDT, August 8, 2008

A New Hyde Park firefighter was injured when he fell on a ladder spike during a practice drill Thursday night, officials said.

Around 7 p.m., xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx was helping to stabilize an extension ladder against an arch at a North Hempstead park at Evergreen and Denton avenues during practice for the department's drill team, said Richard Stein, commissioner of the fire district.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx fell across one of the spikes that hold the ladder into the ground, and sustained a cut on his stomach, Stein said.

He was taken to North Shore- Long Island Jewish Health Systems in Manhasset, where he received sutures, Stein said.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, whose age was not immediately available, has been with the volunteer department for about a year and a half. Their 20-member team, called the New Hyde Park Termites, was practicing for a competition Saturday for Long Island fire departments, Stein said.

YES I DO FEEL VERY BAD FOR THE FF AND I HOPE HE PULLS OUT OK MY THOUGHTS ARE WITH HIM BUT FOR YOU TO SAY THEY ARE DOWNPLAYING IT MAYBE YOU SHOULD JUST WRITE THE EDITORIAL YOURSELF . ....AGAIN JUST MY THOUGHTS...

Is it just me, or did Newsday actually write an article involving the fire service that just stated the facts without politicizing or otherwise commenting?

the article was exactly the same as the news clipping done by news 12...maybe this cablevision ownership will turn in our favor.

how did they get ahold of this story? why was this even reported to the news?

last time i checked it was illegal to report peoples injuries without their consent, i dont know if this guy wanted it out there, just seems weird that he would want to publish this in the paper.

The ambulance call for this went over 46.10. The call was located in Garden City Park fire protection district and it was a New Hyde Park member so the there was alot of chatting from TWO departments on the radio, not just one.

Something I don't think enough of us out there realize is how much the news services are actually listening to our radio frequencies. You have NO idea. As quick as many incidents happen, the news media is on the phone making inquiries about the incident. Something to keep in the back of your mind once in a while.
