Well, its not KeySpan anymore, so Asplundh has been contracted by National Grid to do 5 houses a day here in Franklin Square....

...After a "runaround", I finally asked a "on scene" supervisor, as they are EVERYWHERE....

..From what I was told, the good news is they are installing curb shutoffs for each house that doesnt have one. They are also "forcing" poly pipe through exisiting gas lines (curb to house) to prevent "future and current" leaks....

..In several houses they are also re-doing gas meters to the exterior of the house...

..Can anyone else shed a little light as to "whats cookin?"...

They ran "poly" through the pipes in Suffolk about 15 years ago. They also replaced the meters like you said, that they are now doing in Nassau. Guess they figured it was time to do preventive maintenance.

Yes correct when Keyspan was bought by Nat grid they are required to repair something like 500 miles of gas main by 2009 all throught the county as per the contract between the two . As per a supervisor that i spoke to. We ( at the water dist.) are getting markout request about 25-40 a day for the last 2 weeks for the houses that they will be working infront of we have probably marked out something like 400+ houses in the elmont/franklin square /stewart manor area in the last couple weeks ...

up here on the north shore they (asplunhd) were working down my block installing the new poly main...right next to the existing steel main....soon to shut down the steel main.

the main to my house was a 3/4 steel line...that they snaked a 1/2 poly line down the inside...my guess is it has a lil higher pressure...nothing serious tho....

also it seems they are trying to relocate meters to the outside of the residents...to eliminate the need for the gas vent to the outdoors...and make it a lil easy for emergencies/and maintenance work.

a relative of mine is on the emergency crew for national grid...and has been working there for about 35 years...and gets dispatched by national grid to all the gas related fires and such...as he states during a gas emergency "If your not standing next to me, your in the wrong spot"

just be careful around that stuff...

btw i love the asplundh work site...tools and dirt everywhere...and that nice dry chem extinguisher sitting close by...like if something blows up...i wanna be the guy on the can...RIGHT.

our requests for markouts have sky rocketed as well......N.G. is upgrading most of their service lines and mains in Lido Beach..mostly on the southern part of Lido Blvd. just west of County and Town beaches. Although they have managed to hit our lines 12 times and counting (same service line 3 times might I add), and rip up a few other things that no one could figure out what they were, they work pretty safe and pretty swift for such a large scale contractor.
