The horns and sirens are a good thing, in a time when the public cares less and less about our service it is a little reminder to them how much we go out. I would not have a problem with them going off 24 hrs a day. we get up leave our families at dinner time and while they sleep to help our neighbors, let everone one know somone needs help and maybee they will be more aware of what we do, it cant hurt and hey you might even get a member or two from it.
I remember as a kid listening to the horns and i knew that there would be a fire truck blasting down the road soon, it was exciting thats when i said i wanted to join when i grew up. Also I dont have my pager stuck to my side 24 hrs a day. if your outside playing ball or grabing lunch at the deli you will hear the horns and know you got a run.
I understand the public thinks its a inconvinence but then again somthimes it's not the best time to drop what your doing and run to the fire house for a call of help but we still do it so basically what iam saying keep em blasting and will keep coming.
What department is this? off-hand I can't think of 2 horns and a clock tower? 3 Fedelcode sirens? Fedelcodes are rare these days and I don't think any town has 3 anymore (made in the 1940's). They are probably the 1950's and later Federal sirens.
your probably right...they might be the newer model federal sirens...
but i am mistaken...its 3 Airhorns in a clock tower...
come in front of SC for a sig 9, and hold on....
I play baseball right next to Dutch Lane School in Hicksville, and I hear all sorts of sh*t from all directions,I can distantly hear Hicksville`s diaphones,I can hear levittowns diaphragm horns at 6 pm,I can hear Model 7`s I don`t know where they are coming from,I can hear a Thunderbolt sort of like Mineola`s beast,I don`t know where that comes from, and I can hear the weird jail sirens very well at 2:00 on saturdays when they test them,Thunderfoot, unfortunatly Hicksville has begun to take down their old rusty sirens, they took down the one on water district property on Newbridge Rd across from Holy Trinity HS,I hear they might be taking them all down,I know the one at Old Country Rd School is still up,the one hidden in the trees on Jerusalem is still there you can actually still see some of the CD yellow paint but it is mostly rusted, there`s also another one further down Jerusalem also on water district property,it`s right in the middle of the field on a pole you cant miss it(if its still there,I haven`t been down that way in awhile, same goes for the one hidden in the trees),and there is another one at another water district location hidden in the trees on Bethpage Road,I know there is at least 2 more but im dieing to know where they are :]
That thunderbolt you hear IS Mineola. Believe me, I played there back in the early 70's at the Dutch field, and back then there were even more to hear including East Meadow. I'm there with my son a lot, and you can still hear as you said Levittown at 6 PM, Hicksville, Bethpage, Plainview, Jericho, Westbury, Mineola, occasionally Uniondale. Still nothing used to match the sirens Hicksville had back in the day. They used to go three rounds of the nearest box, and along West John St you used to have 4 digit boxes like 6651 for example...man those things would go for 20 minutes with those numbers...lol. Interesting story as well about the old siren on Jerusalem near spindle...one of the old timers in Hicksville once told me about the person who had the property that siren was in back of once got fed up with the noise so he took a shotgun and blasted the siren!
Wow,that is sick,Mineola all the way from there.and wow, shotgun?that is crazy! I know a guy from Hicksville FD who grew up there,he said the last time those rusty sirens sounded was in 1976?Has it really been that long? Also, believe it or not,Hicksville`s diaphones had a mean sound until about 2000 or 2001,I`m sure you know what I mean.
1976 would be about right. The horns at HQ used to kick some serious ass. I dispatched there part time from 1986 to 2000, and it used to be hilarious to watch the people walkiing under the railroad tressle when those bad boys went off. They were loud enough to be haerd clearly all the way down by Stewart Ave area. Now you barely hear them from that end of town.

We updated our audibles around 2003ish....
..one "peanut" siren located in a parking lot yet adjacent to someone's rear yard- Shotgun blasts, 9mm & 38 slugs were all recovered from said siren (along with many "chew marks" on the pole).....
..there is now a brand new siren that is louder than ever at said location....
...12 o'clock, 6 o'clock. Maybe 2 runs a day.....
..."You're the moron that bought a house next to a railroad crossing or across from a firehouse or underneath a siren"....
The 30 seconds of inconvenience that people suffer is apparently not worth their neighbors lives when our radio system fails.....
Always wondered how other people even entertain a complaint from someone who moved into a place where there was a pre existing noise condition such as railroad, fire siren, airport etc. Again, for the second time tonight I have to point out again that people are getting more and more stupid.
our SOP is a time table for the sirens with two tones, one for general one for rescue or sig 9's... but if its a 10 or chief calls for them.. horns go off no matter what time it is..
when we had that fully involved maple street fire and the horns were going off before we left the building bc our chief already dropped the 10.. scary feeling but the adrenaline shot was ridiculous.. (btw he had a 2 min response time)
