Default “B” Post Re-inforcement - Dodge Mini-van              Go to Top

On Saturday at work I worked an auto extrication incident involving a NYC Bus and a Dodge Mini-Van. After displacing the drivers side door and cutting the top of the “B” post, personnel attempted to cut the bottom of the “B” Post. Despite numerous attempts and various tools the “B” post could not be cut. After the extrication was completed it was determined that the “B” post contained a tubular steel reinforcement rod that was approximately 1/4 to 3/8ths of an inch thick. Research on the internet shows that this post cannot be cut by hydraulic extrication tools. If you encounter this situation, be prepared to work around the "B" post, you're not going to be able to remove it.

Nice pics. what did you use to finally get through it?
If you enlarge the last picture and look, the tube actually appears as if it was "burned".

The guys working the day tour today cut apart the post with the K12 to see what was inside. The saw wasn't an option during the actual extrication.

does anyone know if its just a chrysler thing? or have other manufacturers adopted this practice of reinforcing the b pillar with a piece of steel pipe?

Nice pictures the B Post in question can be cut with the Holmatro 4050NCT Cutter this cutter has the cutting force of 208,000 PSI. I have used this cutter and cut thru solid core steel up to 1 1/2" in diameter. Nice job though using a alternative method to get the job done.

Many cars r using Boron or rebar inside of the B posts to maintain structural stability. There was an article awhile back in Firehouse Mag in regards to this. The option mention in the article was to completely remove the B post at the rocker panel. Pretty much the same thing you would do if you encountered the seat belt pretensioner system. cut around it to remove the whole post.

Default 4050 cutter              Go to Top

As stated the Holmatro 4050 NCT cutter would have cut the B-Post in that situation. We have documented clinical evidence to support it. I have personally cut 11/2 steel with this awesome cutter

I think the MOC cutter from Hurst also is suppose to be able to cut through Boron.

A reciprocating saw will not cut boron steel. The New Hurst MOC and the Holmatro cutters will work.
