for those of you out there with pools and kids please do yourself a favor and protect them...A horrible accident hit home for a family of an MOS in Staten Island yesterday. The summer is upon us and last thing you wanna hear is an accident that could have been prevented. Get a gate or do whatever you have to to prevent the little ones from sneaking in there. Have fun but be careful...
There are several things you can do to protect children
1. Make sure your fence is high enough and has no place for kids to put their feet to climb over.
2. Make sure all gates are self closing and self latching
3. Make sure all doors leading to a pool are secure and have a door open alarm on them
4. Invest in an actual pool alarm, which detects motion and movement in the water when activated.
This is a small price to pay for your childs safety, think of the bigger price you may pay, if the pool isnt made safe.
I have an online friend whose daughter was a "near drowning". They were able to bring her back, but the little girl will never be the same. She has made some strides over the last 15 months, but it's very slow going. Mom was doing laundry and left her twin 3 year olds watching tv. When she went to check on them, her son was still there, but her daughter was gone. No one knew the little girl could open the lock on the back door. She pulled a couple of chairs over to the pool and you know what happened next.
Nearly the exact same thing happened in my family. My uncle was outside working on the roof. My aunt was in the pool with my cousins. My aunt and the kids went into the house for a cookie. 1 kid sat down on the front porch, my aunt gave the other one a cookie and went to go change the laundry. Came back 5 minutes later to find my uncle jumping off the roof and running to the pool to pull out my cousin. He was also a "near drowning" Lived in a vegtible state for 5 years until he finally died. I can tell you first hand that this incident DESTROYED a large portion of our family. If you have a pool -- Invest in whatever means you have to protect your family.

Saw this on the news. Condolences to the MOS on this tragic loss.
This is the probably the MOST important safety issue a homeowner should address if they have a pool OR if they have small children AND a pool is in the vicinity of where they will be.
If you read all of these tragic stories they all have one thing in common: THE CHILD WAS ONLY OUT OF SIGHT FOR A MINUTE OR TWO. That is all it takes. Please secure your pool area and WATCH YOUR CHILDREN.
Folks I just heard this on News 12 this morning that there were two more pool related injuries in Suffolk County within a 24 hour period one in Saint James and one in Miller Place. The one in Miller Place was an adult and the one in Saint James was a child if I heard correctly. October is our fire prevention month I know it is late for pools to be open but my department always puts out literature on pool and bath tub safety. Just because the pool has a cover on it does not mean it is safe for a child to be left unattended they can still find a way to climb up and get on to the cover. This is an issue that our departments have to stress to the public during this time to help prevent these accidents from happening.
What a concept! Then again this is 2007, where warnings have to be clearly printed on your McDonalds coffee cups that the contents are HOT! Guess the kid watching thing is definitely a stretch for the modern day brite lights we have roaming the earth today
