Default BAE Systems Interoperability              Go to Top

On June 10th 2008 extensive testing was done on an Interoperabilty system for the Hempstead Fire Department and West Hempstead Fire Department. Many know the VHF(highband) 154.0700 Fire Ground of the Hempstead Fire Department and the UHF(highband) 460.1750 of the West Hempstead Fire Department.

Well in todays times with everyone using Motorola Radios with their corner on the market we would never in 100 years be able to speak to each other with the radios we have due to the band and frequency range.

BAE Systems developed a "Blender" Wi-Fi System that can have say a Hempstead Portable transmit and be heard on VHF lowband, UHF Highband and even 800mHz, And You will be able to transmit back with clarity, with the aid of a box "blending system. and a laptop computer. Just by the flick of a switch-HONESTLY!

We all go mutual aid to departments, we know how crazy it can get, for instance your mutual aided to a fire and are operating on the first floor in a house fire as a truck, you have a moderate smoke condition on the 1st floor but are opening up and not hearing reports given by any of the HOST departments members let alone the chief. "The Urgent Is Given To Get Out Of The House" Do you want that delayed because the Chief at the command post from your Department has to relay that to you and your member? Or should it be done in 1 shot? We all know that sometimes you wont be able to spare the guy at the command post or maybe a Chief from your Department is unable to respond. Its all about being on the same page and this system is a good start at it. If anyone has questions on this system please PM me and I can also forward you to the right people for the best information.

Thats great that there trying to get inter ops to work but who carries the (BAE Systems) what if that unit isn't on scene. now what. I'm sure it's an expensive system would it be more efective if the dept just got UHF radios and used the Nassau County Fire ground channel. or the host f/g

Obviously that would be nice...but is Hempstead Gonna Switch to UHF?...is South Hempstead Going To? Around Here Depts that still work on these Freq

The System Costs Approx $5000.

Now Going Rate For A Decent Portable Motorola Radio $1200. Not The HT750 Or 1250 because they are not Fire Rated Radios The PR1500. You Just Bought 4 Radios and $4,800 later, as opposed to having 20 work together off the bat.

As to your other question Put It On Your Most Mutual Aided Apparatus and its there!

PLUS YOU CAN RECIEVE THESE OFF GRANT $$$$$$$- Im not selling them or making money but I was a believer when I saw it work

The system is not expensive at all, These are 2 Departments being pro active with the problem of communications throughout Nassau County. The only thing to remember is that you must have radio discipline. Sure beats carrying 2 portables.

This new equipment sounds fine but does it cure our problems I don't think so.
The only real solution is a mandatory revamping of Nassau County Fire Communication's we must finally get all 71 depts on the same page there is no other alternative. We must have interoperability with each other on both a simplex FG freq & a uhf operations freq there is no other way;and it would be the most cost effective. A uhf dispatching freq. would also be ideal but I'd take the ops and FG immediately. This must be done and must be mandatory and other channels on radios can be programmed to whatever suits each dept but it is long past time on our interoperability issues.

Good point turn. I'm in no way knocking this type of technology but in terms of the nassau county fire service is this the real solution we are looking for or just something that masks the problem.

What is the Wi-Fi?

Does the unit use Wi-Fi to talk to the laptop?
