12, i hear ya on everything you said. here are some of the rules . only 15 members train at any one time , when bailing a safety line will be used, members are issued there gemtors only!!!!!! they get the system only when they pass the course, our instrutor has the final say [ pass -fail] we do teach the window lean, dont forget this is to be used as a last resort only, and if used the training committee will look at why it needed to be used. there is just so much more that goes with the system...... like any thing new there are going to be growing pains..... hay 12 if you would like to come down and see what were doing please be my guest 2 heads are better then one... thanks brother

I just got back from Eastern Mountain Sports. Bought 50' of 8mm static line, and a good carabiner. I don't want to use a bag---I'd rather stuff it in my pocket. Any tips?

connect one end to harness/belt, start one of them braids (forgot the name of the braid that allows you to just pull one end and it will unbraid itself without tangling) where the rope will reach a pocket in your bunker gear, load your pocket with the braided rope with the other end (with carabiner or hook) clipped to harness or loop ready to deploy.

i wonder if someone makes that little phany pack looking thing thats on that pack but one that could attach to a harness. alot easier than loading your pocket with the rope

the bag adds hardly anything to your pocket and gives the rope protection. do you have a hook with the carabiner and harness to attach to? this really should be a dept issue so everyone can be on the same page. after that get a qualified instructor to train the members. there is alot more then putting rope in your pocket that is involved here. although on the other hand if needed its better to have something to try and use rather then nothing

8mm is a good diameter. Did you get the EMS "Fire Resistant" 8mm cord? They (EMS in Carle Place) began selling it after the Black Sunday Fire. It usually sells out very fast. You mention getting a good carabiner ... most of the carabiners that are sold at EMS are rathed in KN's. Try to find a conversion chart (google it) and see what your biner is rated for. e.g. a 27 KN biner should be equal to a working capacity of over 6000 lbs. Sounds like a lot, but most NFPA/fire service ropes and hardware have a 15-to-1 safety ratio and a 9000 lbs. rating. So if your going to invest a couple of dollars in something, you might as well go all out. Do you have a harness on your bunker pants? I only ask because you mention just the biner and the rope.

I've seen one guy carry a rope with no harness, and I recently saw another guy with a harness, but no rope. Both of them claim to be "ready" to bail out. No matter what "system" you put together for yourself, have a plan "A" and then after you practice it a few times, make a plan "B". If you just stuff this rope in your pocket and never deploy it or try sliding under training conditions ... your just adding extra weight to your gear for no reason.

It's great to have a rope/bail out kit/etc. But if you never practice with it, it's not going to do you any good.

The biner is 28kN. The line is not the fire resistant kind---maybe I'll go back and pick up some of that stuff and use this rope for rappelling. I don't have a harness yet, but I think that's going to be my next investment.

thats a very nice system but the only thing wrong with that is if you need to remove your pack. i was looking for a system similar to that, but one that would attach to the type of harness that we are getting, just that little pack that holds the rope would attach to the waist belt part of the harness.

If your currently using a harness, then you may want to consider just a rope for your pocket for the meantime.

Your department is mandated to provide you with a PSS (bail out system), it's just a matter of time before we all have it. Obviously kinks need to be worked out, funding, understanding, believers need to be made out of the non-believers, etc.

But eventually your going to have one.

A decent rope, if you have a harness; might be more ecconomical.

Check out the Petzl-Exo system. I agree what everyone is saying about knowing the signs of a flashover before it occurs. Training is the most important part of any PSS system. Members have to know the proper way to call a MAY DAY!!! and transmit their location in the building so everyone knows before they use their PSS. This is the difference in the PSS training some just want to sell the system others want to make sure firefighters know when and why the system should be used and practice practice practice. Check out the Exo you will be happy you did.
