Drove by the bellmore station around 445am this morning, and saw 2 county buses pulling up along w/ an RMP w/ cops on the platform looking down into the tracks, as well as a train which was stopped 3/4's of the way past the platform...im thinkin someone fought the train and the train won...any of you crazy buffs listening hear what happend?
Channel 4s helicopter was just over the train station and stated that there was police activity and delays were up to 20 minutes. All i saw was police washing down the tracks/platform.
An eastbound non-passenger work train hit and killed a 22-year-old man on the tracks at the Long Island Rail Road station in Bellmore before dawn on Wednesday, a rail road spokesman said.
The man's identity has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
It is unclear what the man was doing on the tracks. The incident remains under investigation by Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police.
The incident occurred at about 4:35 a.m., according to the rail road. Six subsequent westbound Babylon branch trains have either been canceled or delayed -- and residual delays on the branch were running 15 minutes at 7 a.m., according to the rail road.
As a result of the incident, the 5:41 a.m. train from Babylon, due into Penn Station at 6:44 a.m., was canceled -- and customers were accommodated on the 5:56 a.m. train from Babylon, a spokesman said.
The 5:18 a.m. train from Wantagh, scheduled to arrive at Penn Station at 6:08 a.m., also was canceled. Customers were to be accommodated on the 5:12 a.m. train from Babylon.
The 4:39 a.m. train from Babylon, scheduled to arrive in Penn Station at 5:55 a.m., operated 35 minutes late.
LIRR unfortunately is pretty well practiced in these situations. With the exception of the initial response they handle the rest of it entirely on their own.
A fatal pedestrian on the Pkwy. might take a few hours for the investigation, on the LIRR it's wrapped up pretty quickly.
i do not believe Bellmore was ever notified for this call. I saw MTA LIRR employees washing down the platform with water and bleach. Can tell it was the LIRR because they missed a few spots. The news is saying it was an accident, that the man dropped something on the track and he hopped down there to retrieve it....idk unless it was a winning $1,000,000 a year for life ticket i would pretty much say f**k it.
if you ask why the FD was called, they probably will give you some story about how the guy was obviously dead, but you cant pronounce someone unless you have access to them, unless its obvious such as decapitation.
Just heard that the victim is in the Army and has done tours in Iraq and a relative of an 6th battalion Ex-chief......apparently dropped his cell phone on the tracks and i guess u can figure out the rest
Got a call from a fellow BFD member who was working his NCPD EAB post at 0441 hrs telling me we were getting a call as it went out FD being notified. However, between the time he called and the time we would've been toned out, a 10-72 was given. So, we never got it. Too bad if that scenerio is the case.
was not at scene but in nys, pd if certain about death do not need to notify fd for pronouncement and odds of surviving peds/train are rather low.
i have never heard this in my entire life, but hey next time i go to work i will be glad to notify people about this one.
i know i know this isnt the city.... but a quick story
the NYPD yousta be able to request EMS for a pronouncement, they wouuld send a BLS just to pronounce. Until one day the BLS got there and it wasnt a pronouncement, ever since then, anytime PD requests for a "pronouncement" you get a full cardiac arrest response.CFR-D engine, conditions boss, BLS,ALS.
learn from other people mistakes......... dont take every pronouncement as, oh hes dead
btw, pronouncement protocols do not differ in nassau county from AMT, to EMT, to paramedic.
RIP to the person tragically killed in this accident, thanks for your service to our country
