We're discussing Best all-around car scanner antenna
That's exactly where I am. Maybe I should look for a lowband specific antenna.
Maybe i should clear this up lol
When i get a call, and im responding... my scanner is always on in the car, and i hear 46.12 perfectly. I hear bayville, LV, East norwich, OB, Roslyn, Glenwood, Syosset, Jericho perfectly from oyster bay.
What i meant by out of the hills is that i dont have a huge reach from down here. If i want to hear east meadow, i gotta be up on 106 near jericho's cider mill.
go online to scanermaster.com and get a spliter it splits your am/fm antena for use with your scaner i pick up alot of stuff from nhp out to ronkonkama or nhp into the city crystal clear

Though the splitter is a lot smaller than an antenna, it is also as much as or even more expensive then some antennas. (RS Mag Mount) I rather just buy the actual thing at this point.

Also, while in suffolk county last night, i was picking up tons of departments toning out on 46.4600 with no problem... So its not a bad antenna... Im fine with it. in the 400mhz range, its booming.

At first I went out and got one of those Radio Shack glass mount antennas. It worked great in Montgomery County PA on the 800MHz system---I was picking up the system from Jersey, about 50 miles out. The city (NYPD/FDNY) came in pretty well, a little fuzzy. Low band here? Sucked. In Locust Valley I couldn't even hear Glenwood tone out. It was completely miserable.
I went out and took everyone's advice here and got the Radio Shack Magnet Mount antenna and threw it on my roof. I ran the cable through the rear right door and ran it underneath the upper trim into the dash and down to the scanner. It works 20x better than the glass mount on low band, the city comes in much clearer. I haven't had a chance to test it on 800Mhz, but I bet it will work very well.
I decided to keep the glass mount installed as a backup, since I'll be moving down into hurricane alley this week.
