We're discussing Best all-around car scanner antenna
Thanks. I have an Explorer so I don't think a trunk lip will work.
The best scanner antenna for a car (IMO) that I have is the "Spectra Austin Antenna". The antenna is a little bit pricey. Then you would have to buy the lip mount or the magnet mount separately.
... And yes, regardless if you have an SUV or not, you can get a lip mount for this antenna and clip it on the hood of your car as you would if you had the trunk of a car. If you rather go with the magnet mount, they are available for this antenna too.
If you are looking to spend less money, the second best antenna (IMO) that I've used and have is the "Radio Shack Magnet Mount Mobile scanner antenna".
If you are looking for a "lower profile" antenna, I have used a "Dual Band Antenna" or a regular "VHF" antenna because I didn't like the length of the others. The downside to this is that the reception is not going to be as good. The price range (just for the antenna) falls in between the other two. You would also have to buy the lip mount or the magnet mount separately.
Excuse my ignorance, but how does a magnet mount work? It looks like I'd still have to drill a hole for the cable.
Whoa there, Killer. put the drill away... Set the mount on the highest point on the roof , usually over the B pillar( although you might want to put a thin piece of cloth between the magnet and the roof to prevent scratching the paint) and then you'd run the cable thru the door opening and under the interior moldings to the scanner or whatever radio. therefore NO holes!

Oh ok, so it won't interfere with the closing/seal of the door then? Thanks for the help guys, I'm clueless with this stuff!

Well.. Not necessarily... You will still have to run the wire somewhere. The wire will show from the top of the roof and through the door crack if you choose to run it that way.
Also, when i bring my portably scanner in the car it cuts in and out. Will a different antenna such as the radio shack one help this matter or do i need a mobile/base scanner?

The "Radio Shack Antenna" should improve the reception.
The Radio Shack mag-mount has always worked the best for me on all bands. Another is the Austin multi-band antenna also is good but you'll need to buy the appropriate mount separately.
