There used to a lot more incidents in Nassau before they elevated some of the other railroad crossings. Eventually they will have to do something about the Bethpage crossing too. Until then, it's sad to say that a few more people will die before they make any changes over there.

50 y/o on a bike, yes, there are alot of stupid people out there. This is however, an extremely busy station that lets off hundreds of commuters, not directly in to a lot, but right on to the roadway. The train is literally sitting almost at the gate crossings and it sits for a bit so people get used to that and try to cross to get to their neighborhood or car. That goes on all through rush hour and they see the train sitting so they assume that they will know when its going to move, they forget that stepping past that can lead you into the path of a passing 80mph express...its a congested station.

I used to live about 100' from the rail station. It's a very, very busy station. Lots of express trains and the rush hours are huge.
The other problem is that the rails cross Stewart at almost a 30 degree angle, it's not a straight-across-the-road setup. It's easy to become disoriented when crossing the tracks if you're walking w/ your head down. Seveal of these fatalities over the past few years have been suicides.
However........for the "accidental" tragedy, how one can not notice the gates, flashing lites, etc is beyond me. The gates extend to fully block the north and south lanes. When a train in in the station and another train approaches teh opposite direction an additional flashing device and a voice-recording come on and says "Warning..Second Train Coming" over and over again. I don't understand how people can mistake any of these warning signs. Yet there will be those who blame MTA for these accidents. Guess we've lost all sense of persnonal accountability, huh? Raising / lowering roadways only serves to raise my taxes and ease traffic, let's not use that as the panacea to solving these fatalities.

I agree with most…… The safety precautions set up at grade level crossings are more than adequate, however if your going to break the law no matter what, safety goes out the window and now your introducing yourself to danger. I take the train from Bethpage everyday and watch the same imbecile’s everyday running under the crossing. Additionally as was previously mentioned there are visual and audible alarms and if those are not adhered to, harshly put; all bets are off. However, on the other hand knowing that Bethpage train station is notorious for pedestrians being struck, where is the MTA Pd when those are breaking the law to be given citations. When I speed I get a ticket, how come enforcement is not happening at these stations. Just like blowing a red light, take it at your own risk. What are you going to make all intersections elevated to so that there are no intersections? I find it hard to sympathize with people who break the law.

Victim was struck at th Braoadway crossing and the train finally came to a stop near stewart ave.
Victim was a friend of mine who in the past few years was down on his luck.

either way you look at it....its too crowded, too busy and too level for the population over there...and yes, there are idiots who cross when they shouldnt....but it is a popular stop for the suicidal...and thank god we have been spared kid fatalities...raise it, like herricks road and all over mineola...out east...grade crossings are fine...theres hundreds of people at a time crossing here....sorry about your friend

I asked a friend who is MTAPD and she advised me that the MTAPD does grade crossing enforcement all over their system, including Bethpage. Unfortunately, they don't have the manpower to be everywhere at once.
