Default "Boss" Bashing              Go to Top

Usually deleted before most of the rant sees it, I dont understand the need to "Boss Bash" on a public Rant board.... whether it be a Lt all the way up to a commish....

...Its as simple as this, they are ELECTED positions- if ya dont like them or a decision they made or whatever, DONT VOTE FOR THEM NEXT TIME! Or better yet, RUN AGAINST THEM!

As much as some people like to think there shop is a dictatorship, IT IS NOT! Everyone there is ELECTED.

..Or one better, either go through your chain of command, or address the person individually- saves a lot of time & aggravation.

By posting under "anonymous" screenames like "Joe123" but including specific details relative to a person, dept or incident, you basically give yourself up.

Be man (or woman) enough to stick to your guns. Or man up and say it in person.

(PS-this isnt based on any specific incident on here, just a trend that happens on here when po'ed brothers post)

i love that comment, because it is so true. if you feel you can do a better job, then why not step up and see if other people share your same views by voting for you. As much as this whole fire serv.... scratch that. WORLD, is about politics and who you know but, you have to have some ability to get elected to office in the fire service, much less a busy department, i know of plenty over qualified guys who got passed up on high positions by someone.. not so qualified, but then you have guys who have no clue of what their talking about and want to bash everyone else, in which running never crossed their mind, because deep down they know either A. they would lose miserably or B. they would totally f things up. what's the phrase you guys use. "armchair qb" it's a beautiful thing when you dont have a full blitz package including four lineman three linebackers and four db's putting the pressure on YOU!!!

just because you think you can do a better job then the current officer doesnt mean that you should run for that spot.....For instance, (hypothetically, NOT reality here) If i think im better then my capt. then why dont i run for office, well for starters maybe i dont have the time to commit? What I'm trying to say, is that, there are plenty of qualified people, but maybe some of them dont run because they realize that they arent around enough or can not make such a huge commitment for what ever reason, work, school family etc... and are being responsible in not running for office so as to not be a failure down the road when they arent around? That could be a good reason why someone might be speaking thier mind but not running for office

I agree 100%. One might not like someone in office, and may not run because they feel they lack leadership skills, and doesn't to let one self or others down.

How about another important point here: lots of people who bash officers and leaders have never held any real leadership positions themselves, and don't have any idea what it's like from the other side. Maybe if they were in the position, they would be forced to make decisions that don't always make Joe Firefighter happy. But, guess what, if you go through the whole term without pissing anyone off, you didn't do your job.

Praise in Public, Discipline, Disagree- discreetly..... why cant people that think it shouldve been done this way just pull someone to the side and explain where they are comming from? I know i have a lot to learn and i'm not the best captain but i do appreciate when someone pulls me to the side and hears me out or explains what they wouldve done. we are all on the SAME team, some people just chose not to be.....

Some people let the position get to their head. Another reason is one may not have liked criticism before they got in, so they don't want to hear squat now. After a run, either at the house or in the rig on the way back someone may start a discussion on how would you have done it, and why.

Nice post Bruce. When I was an officer there was not much that used to bother me, but from time to time I would hear some members that would "Monday Morning Quarterback" certain alarms, you know the alarms that they never show up to, instead of pulling an officer aside and saying something like "Hey Cap nice job but maybe you could have done this or that." I never understood why these particular members would want to bash an officer of a particular incident instead of trying to help them learn. I always used to ask members, especially senior members, about a particular incident if I was not sure of something. These guys can be a great resource but they can also be a thorn in your side. JMO.
