40 Merrick Avenue cross of Glenn Curtis blvd at the Bristol, reported to be 3 working car fires next to a building with exposure problems on the #2 side
reported all have been evacuated, starting to get smoke condition in building on first floor, second floor reported to be clear with a few broken windows
Just came from the scene, from the parkway it looked like the building was goin up, heavy smoke conditioned and it seemed they had 2 of the 3 knocked down, fire marshal was en route I think pics to follow
No reported extension on the second floor, taking some windows out to ventilate due to smoke condition. 2 lines stretched and in operation, going to Foam ops and going to be an extended operation
ya i left work 2 go 2 it.. saw smoke all the way from west hempstead.... i got there and was on the nob on the 3rd line wich was the foam line... the first 2 cars went down pretty easy with water... but one had a nice sized gas leak that was on fire under it... aslo pushin out of the gas cap like a blowtorch at some points so thats y we went 2 the foam... water was pushin the fire all over the place... dam good fire tho
Ya shoulda heard NCPD Air Bureau going over the radio. They thought it was the Assisted Living building itself that was on fire and said the FD was doing an evacuation of the building. I guess the smoke was too much for them to see it was only cars.
A lot of heavy black smoke coming from the scene. I was with my daughter at Front Street and Hempstead Tpke when I saw the smoke showing. A few seconds later NCPD aviation was overhead. So.... I buffed it!!! Ha Ha Ha!!! The boys made a nice stop, considering the cars involved were about five to six feet from the structure. Things could have gotten real bad quick if the wind picked up. I tell you what, the smoke was thick even from the parking lot. It did seem like the side of the "Bristol" was about to take off, if not involved already. Additionaly, nice placement of all the rigs. Chiefs cars were kept at a distance, and the ambulance positioned itself with easy access to the street if need arose to transport. The first due truck was in decent position to manuvere what would be the #1 exposure side if put to work. So, kudos to the boys in East Meadow for quick control of the fire to protect the exposure. Even though this was just a few cars on fire, due to the proximity of the assisted living and the population inside, it goes to show that a situation can go from "routine" to "legit" quick. Stay safe all and Happy Halloween.
