Once your card expires, you have up to ten years (I believe) to take a challenge refresher. A challenge refresher is:

1. you take a written placement exam, broken down into several modules
2. if you score an 80 or better on each module, you are exempt from attending the corresponding refresher lectures
3. you then take your practical skills test on the next night of class. Pass all your skills and you're exempt from attending the refresher labs
4. if you score less then an 80 on any written modules, or fail any skill stations, you're required to attend those lectures / labs
5. at the end of the class you re-take the skills you initially failed
6. there's a CPR refresher component in there too

???? Hey we don't set the prices, we use Doc Brown because they offer the courtesy of coming to the first night of class to sell the books.

But I agree that it makes financial sense to buy used.
