Off the top of my head without looking anything up, Roslyn Rescue (Rescue H&L Co. 1), Glen Cove and Hempstead come to mind. Roslyn Rescue's charter was signed in 1852. Glen Cove had a 125th or a 150th, I think a 125th parade in 1987, so that would bring them back to like 1837 or about; and Hempstead was one of the oldest departments as well.
Don't forget that until 1898, Queens was part of Long Island and there were MANY volunteer companies then as well. The existing volunteer companies in NYC aren't nearly as old.
<<<<< the house pictured here has been in the same spot since 1879 ... hempstead harper hook and ladder had a different location from where they are now, but was probably established before ... as so im told .
I have no idea about Hempstead, but it is a logical choice. The stories I've heard go something like Glen Cove have being the first chartered, and Roslyn Rescue still operating under thier original charter. I am not positive about that, but it is the way I remember the story. The newest is definitely South Farmingdale, organized 1957 I believe.
As an aside- for the first few years of SFFD existence, they operated under the Farmingdale Fire District......must have been awkward... it was maybe 5 years until the creation of the South Farmingdale Fire District.
Not sure of the whole story- plus I dont want to open a long closed can o' worms between FFD and SFFD, once the FFD finished the new sub-station, (current SFFD HQ),a lot of friction as to how to man the new station came about... At the time, the Farmingdale Fire District ran from Plainview to Massapequa and a bit into Suffolk. Made sense to build a south-end house...
Hempstead's first company formed was Eagle Engine Company 1 in 1832, followed by Union Engine 2 and Harper Hook & Ladder 1. It is known as Harper Hook & Ladder, not Harper Hill. It was named after an early benefactor of the Hempstead Fire Department.
Bellmore FD created a new company back in about 2001 or 2002. West End Engine Company #3. They became the 4th company in Bellmore (joining Advance HL&E Co.1, Hose Co.#1 and Bellmore Harbor Engine Co.#2) and were the first Company to receive a new charter in the state since the 70s I believe.
