What gloves are issued by your department? Cheap ones forced on the chief's by the company selling them turnout gear? The bulky crap ones with the blood borne liner on the inside that never align themselves (the liner) after the first time you wear them? Blue FDNY style gloves? Firefighter combat challange gloves? TEMPO (the best) gloves?
You see a lot of guys with their fancy BMX look-a-like extrication gloves, meanwhile a good pair of leather hardware store gloves work just as well, or even a buffy pair of trade masters.
Everyone should have at least two pairs of fire gloves and on the fireground (in a bunker pants pocket or back in the cab of the rig), two pairs of gloves - a pair for fire duty and a pair for other work, be it packing hose, etc.
Seperate gloves for extrication, rope rescue, water rescue, K9 rescue, ARFF, interior firefighting, fire police, EMS but not just latex disposable - more ... but not as strong as extrication gloves, etc.
Can't forget the LIPA and Con Edison gloves, good gloves and usually free. And I'm sure someone will want to talk about the old days with the orange fire ball gloves ... those were the old days. Some departments seem to buy one size and everyone's hands seem to "swim" in their gloves. But curious to see what some departments are issuing to their members.
I use the Pro Tech Titans at work and I love em I'll never go back to those blue oven mitts, I'm trying to get a hold of the new glove that MP is about to release the "super Glove" looks like a well designed glove
When it comes to any type of PPE; for people going out and buying their own equipment - be it at work or in the vollies (more important at work), make sure that what you purchase and use; meets or exceeds the standards that are presently met by whatever equipment your department issues you. For your own good and safety.
Pro Tech Titans and TEMPO gloves are better than the blue oven mitts, but the blue oven mitts are better than most gloves issued out here on the Island.
12 good point I thought the fireguard commander (oven mitts) were great till I found out about the protechs. Great dexterity lil tough to get ur hand back in when they are wet, only con I got em through their site techtradellc.com ask for andy very nice guy. They are nfpa 2007 but I keep the blue ones on the rig godforbid something happens to my hands
Mediums in both the oven mitts and the TEMPO's ... big pet peeve is how a lot of departments out here just give a new guy brand new gloves ... EXTRA LARGE ones. Yeah you have to have the oven mitts with you in case "something happens." Now one of us will have to explain what it means to get "hooked up."
I prefer the Tempo gloves very comfortable very good dexterity. A little pricey at $50.00 but a very good glove better then the FDNY Gloves that are a pain in the ass to get on if they are wet you do not have that problem with the Tempo Gloves.
I'm trying the pro techs, the jury is still out on them, great feel though.....and I always have a pair of leather work gloves for overhaul and other bull stuff...buy them in a lot of 3 at Home Depot. I also have an old pair of work boots in my gear "cubicle" on the rig, and a small duffel bag with an extra pair of those gloves also socks and a t shirt or sweatshirt in the winter. Oh and the work boots are for all the times I race to the firehouse for a mutual aide standby, kick off my shoes, put on my bunker bottoms, jump on the rig and then i'm standing around the relocating station an hour later saying to myself I wish I brought my shoes, this way I always have a pair of something if I forget to put them in the rig. "So i'll bring my shoes so I have them" sol rosenberg 1994
Pro-techs seem great, the FDNY isn't sold on them yet either. The FDNY still issues the blue oven mitts and compared to what most Nassau departments buy and issue, the oven mitts feel amazing. I use the oven mitts out here. I keep a pair of the oven mitts with me at work, but mainly use TEMPO gloves. And, like SPIN THE WHEEL said, my "dirty" work gloves are the leather Home Depot ones and my "clean" work gloves are the Trade Master Gel batting glove type gloves. It's definitly a good idea to keep seperate work gloves for non-firefighting work, overhaul, MVA's, wash downs, etc. And, since rope shouldn't be handled with dirty gloves, a "clean" pair of work gloves is advisable too.

Anybody try the super glove yet? I have seen it advertised in the trade magazines.....I saw where someone said they can pick up a dime with it? I really doubt that but who knows.....they are expensive also over $100 a pair.
I recently received two pairs of ProTech8 gloves, both long cuff and short cuff. I haven't had the opportunity to work much with them yet, but just by donning them they definitely are an upgrade over my department issued gloves. Much greater dexterity...I'd have no problem using them for both firefighting and extrication.
I've just used a pair of Pro Tech 8 Titans at 2 recent fires and they are just as good or better then the old Pro Tech 8's. These gloves you can get on and off when wet, it's not an easy on and off when wet, but it is easier then the old ones, which was about the only complaint the old ones had. These also meet all standards. They also have a extrication glove out the Pro Tech 8 Titan-X.
