I really think the HiWay Bars are a great idea & concept for certain Chiefs vehicles here in Nassau. I think it's good for FD's who cover the Parkways & Expressways along with other major roadways. I know some of you are going to say "that's why we have the PD" but not every time will you have the PD there first. Take for example, how often do you find NYSP on scene before the FD on the parkways........I know here in Roslyn's district we end up there before them a lot of times. The only thing negative with the HiWay bars is the cost. I think they are around $15,000. But, for the most part the bars are effective. And for those who don't know, that is 5601 car above. It's an exact spec of an FDNY Battalion Chief's car as you can see.
Def Needed For Depts With Highways...so, If They Are Costly...rub Off All That Gold Leaf And Go With Reflective Decals.....better To Spen The Money On Something That Might Avoid A Firman, cop Or Civilian Getting Mowed Down....
Not sure what the exact cost is, but with installation, it is pricy....
... For a vehicle that MAY or MAY NOT be on scene (Chief at work, out of town, etc), seems like a lot....
...I dont think its $15K though- as if that was the case, the FDNY, NYPD, NCPD, SCPD, etc would not go for it as that is close to 1/2 of the actual vehicle cost...
..I DO think it is a great concept & idea. And anything that enchances safety of personnel operating is well worth looking into.

Personally I think it is a great idea because you dont just have to use the highway bar at an MVA. You can use it as a Incident command marker for your Mutual units coming to know where they have to report to!
Ok....correction to that previous figure......I just asked the "operator of the above vehicle" and he said it ranges anywhere between $5,000 to $10,000 depending on the set-up.........MFD594 as u can tell there is no gold leaf on the vehicle...hence the savings lolol
I concur with the above. But like said the safety of everyone operating including civilians is worth the cost of the unit, being that people aren't replaceable.
