It was brought up at the Fire Commission meeting that Mercy Hospital was looking to do away with their Trauma Center designation, after looking into it, they have petitioned the state to do this.
For those EMS Agencies in that area, this could be a problem, not only for extended transport times for trauma patients, but also, longer waits at the remaining trauma centers.
That is a shame. It seems that hospital is really going down the tubes.
I guess that is what happens when state aid is continually cut year after year and when a good portion of the customers are uninsured. They should sell to NSLIJ now and get it over with already.
No they are part of Catholic Health Services [CHS] which include Mercy, St. Francis, St. Catherines in Smithtown, St. Charles in Port Jefferson and a few nursing homes around the Island.
Just another option to keep in mind....
For the 5 Towns, Atlantic Beach, and West End of Long Beach coverage area, Jamaica Hospital is a Level 1 Trauma Center and time wise can be better or the same distance as SNCH a level 2 Trauma Center.
Made it from AB to Jamaica hosp in about 11 min. with a stab to the chest and the Trauma Team was very impressive.
they are 'giving up' their level 2 status this month....
with the lack of trauma, OB, and peds sevices down here in South Western Nassau it sounds like we could be in a pickle....
I would agree that Jamacia is closer than one would think, but it really depends on the time of day...especially if you plan on using the good old 'Van Quick'!
Actually Mercy has a target date of releasing their trauma receiving designation of September 1st. They have been served with notice by NYS DOH that they cannot do this without an approved plan (to include doh, remsco, area agenices and hospitals) for trauma service in the area.
Part of this may be pressure from the State. In Suffolk, they are trying to force St. Charles to close most of its services because they "duplicate" those of Stony Brook. The problem is that Stony Brook will have to start some of these programs that St. Charles has (the same ones that have been "duplicated"...esp the physical rehab). The bottom line is that Stony Brook has been having a lot of problems and the state is trying to build up their hospital by messing with the CHS hospital. may be the same thing here with mercy and the failing public hospital NUMC.
question.... we had a child aided case like 2 weeks ago and they had the choice of winthrop or LIJ, now isnt that an issue as well? thats a little far for the south shore.... can a child go to local hospitals in other cases or do they have to go to a childrens hospital?

winthrop and LIJ are peds trauma centers. The child might have needed a trauma center where SNCH can handle peds cases but not peds trauma's.
