MERRICK, N.Y. (CBS) ― Like dozens of other people Friday night, they came to Merrick in costume – but the people who invaded and robbed one local home were not out for Halloween fun.

"If you're gonna dress in costume and commit a crime, tonight's the night, right?" neighbor Bob Young said.

Unfortunately, it appears that Young is right.

The trick-and-treaters who came to the door of the Merrick house weren't kids, and weren't looking for candy.

The man of the house was alone.

"He went to the front door, and he encountered three individuals. The first one, Superman, barged in – he was wearing a full Superman outfit with the fake muscles and the full mask," Nassau Police Lt. Kevin Smith said. "There was another person wearing a monster's mask as well and blue jeans. The third person, he couldn't really identify."

The homeowner told police that they spent about 20 minutes in the house after hitting him with the butt of a gun, knocking him down, and tying him up.

He said they too several thousand dollars in cash before they fled out the back door into the night.

The area has fairly light trick-or-treat traffic. Neighbors Joe and Patricia Cucuzzo are unnerved at news of the costumed home invasion across the street.

"It's very scary, it's very strange, very weird," Pat Cucuzzo said.


"Right now were looking for a Superman with a Spanish accent," Lt. Smith said. "Another person was wearing a mask, and the third person had no kind of costume on at all."


All three perpetrators had Spanish accents. The owner heard them say that it was time to go.

He was able to free himself from his ropes and went next door, where he took some time to explain to neighbors that this wasn't a Halloween prank.

Hmmmm....again, another home invasion story that smells fishy. How many people do you know keep thousands of dollars in cash lying around the house???? I can't even count them on ONE finger. Bottom line, someone knew the cash was there. You think it's a coincidence that they chose just the right house to hit???? I think those 3 banditos should use that money to play Lotto, they're on a lucky streak!

I guess we shall see what comes after the investigation.

we are talking about south merrick tho. not to be stereo typically but there are some wealthy families down that way. if you know one of those homeowners owns a business or has nice cars and big house chances they have nice expensive jewelry and cash lying around is good. i dont think this was an inside job. they perps just either happened to get lucky or new it was an elderly male alone. all they had to do was stand outside the door and watch people trick or treat to see if the guy was a 6'6 muscle head or a 5'5 grandpa.

Free Agent- The house was not South Merrick so much, It was between Merrick Rd and Sunrise Highway, forget which street they said it was on, but it's not South of Merrick Rd.

Where the incident took place was just south of Sunrise Hwy, hardly a "wealthy" area.

Regardless, it's just one more reason to invoke your Constitutional right to bear arms.

Actually it was pretty ingenious of those assholes. Like my mama always says: "If only these people used their brains for something good..."

Glad it was a ways from my house, and glad my dog stood watch at the door for me. He nearly scared the crap out of the Verizon man who came calling that night too.

And Thunder -- I was giving out the good stuff: Hersheys Miniatures and Kit Kats. LOL

Ehh you'd be surprised. A lot of old people keep thousands in the house, especially ones who are living by them selves. I'm not sure if this guy lived by himself or was just the only one home at the time. Think about it, when your 80 years old, living by yourself, you can't always just run over to the bank to withdraw money.
