We're discussing Mutual Aid when your 1st due is OOS
I have a question for you guys. Lets say you're first due ladder or engine is OOS. You have a 2nd due in service, but thats it for your district. A neighboring dept calls you for mutual aid to stand by, not to go to work. Would you send your only ladder or engine that is in service protecting your district to them to stand by? What are some policies out there in the county? I have heard mixed things on whether some departments would send them, based on whether they are going to work or standing by.
however, there is nothing wrong with letting the dispatcher know that you are unavailable. Many Departments, unless they are going to the scene, will advise that they are unavailable for a mutual aid, especially if they are standing by in another district's quarters..
not saying its the option i would chose, but it is still another option
engine prob isnt that big of a deal...most depts have more then 1 engine...or at least more then 1 and or a quint.
with your ladder standing by in another district...is something going to be happening in your district that a rescue truck...or portables off an engine cant handle?
what about sending Rescue trucks to standby...most depts only have one...
Some departments like my own have one ladder truck and a heavy rescue. The heavy rescue is pretty much set up as a second truck company with all the same tools, ground ladders etc except for the big momma on top. We also have position riding that is the same as the truck. All structure fires the rescue acts as a second truck company. This allows us to sent our ladder truck to all mutual aid requests, without compromising our district responsibilities. Any help?
I have been a firm believer that you have to handle the emergency that is going on, yes we need to be ready for what "might" happen, but when a neighboring department requires assistance, we should go, there is nothing wrong with backfilling if need be, from another department.
In my department we have 1 ladder and 1 heavy rescue and the ladder always does standbys and the heavy rescue never gets out. If we have a run and the camera, or ladders or the truck is needed we'll call mutal aid for a ladder. I also agree we should take care of the emergency that is happening now not what MIGHT happen
