I'm gonna confirm this. Some nights, sure as hell felt like 18 stories!
Always looked forward to the tower and the taxpayer basement back in the day.Real good fires that's what its all about broke your butt and had fun at the same time I miss it.
I remember my first year in (93) finishing up the first evolution in the tower and the Captain realizing we were 1 man down and by man i mean a 300 lb pos. He them tells me to go back up & make sure he gets down. Try having a 300lb man draped on you for 3-4 stories AFTER the evolution....
Chief Pendel he was the best I had him for arson recognition back in 2001 when he was almost ready to retire. I have only been in my department 11 years I wish I was in my department when he was still in the burn buildings he was a great person who was also taken from the fire service too quickly.
Taxpayer basement.....always fun. I used to love going in through the bilco doors in the front. It was snotty and hot but once you got past that thermal barrier going down the stairs, it wasn't too bad at all. Man those were fun times.
Back in 88 or 89 hit lit the ground floor and the top 2 floors on us and as we were walking back down from the top floor we noticed the smoke not getting better he had lit the 2nd floor for us just in case we were not tired enough. The new tower is a killer just because of the size and amount of turns. The hottest fire now is the first fire in the garden apartments. How many on here remember the best night of fire school THE PITS those pics on page one bring back fond memories I wish they never got rid of those.
