Default Nassau Corrections Exam              Go to Top

There will be a written exam given for the position of Correction Officer with the Nassau County Sheriff's Department on April 12, 2008.

As always with this exam, the filing period is very short. You must file by March 11, 2007.

Here is a link to the exam announcement:

http://www.nassaucivilservice.com/NC...4?OpenDocument

Scroll down to the bottom of the announcement for a link to the blank applications.

If anyone has any questions about the job or hiring process you can IM me.

Good Luck !

True, but you have to start some where.

The inservice deal has been squashed for now anyway. Anyone with less than 3 years on has not been scheduled for inservice for 2008 because the union is fighting the issue.

11 years to top pay...but you will be making $54,000 as your base on your 3 year anniversary. No bad !!

Candidates must not be less than 18 years of age and must not have reached their 70th birthday on the date of the written test.
Yikes!! 70 years old, they must be hurting worse then NYPD. How much do you make after a year on the job? I'm seriously considering this.

With the current contract (which is expired) :
Medical benefits kick in after 6 months
Starting salary for 1st 12 months $25,000 not including night diff, holiday pay, OT...etc
1 st anniversary $35,000 not including above additionals
2 nd anniversary $42,000 not including above additionals
3 rd anniversary $54,000 not including above additionals
You will get a raise on every anniversary up to your 11th year topping out at $72,000.

Don't expect a lot of overtime. Due to all the hiring, it has been drying up a bit, however, there may be quite alot of people retiring over the next few years for the OT to kick into full gear, but there is no guarantee.

Having never worked in the city jails I can't really compare the two. The job is not that bad in my opinion. Is it dangerous ? sure, you never know what can happen at any time. If you take your training serious and do your job to the best of your ability the odds will be in your favor.
I look at it like this, if you can run into a burning house or building and utilize your training and common sense to stay safe, then you can certainly do this job. But things can happen in a burning house or building that are unpredictable much like this job, so you never let your guard down.

This job is not glamorous. But like any job, this job is basically what you make of it.

Civil service jobs are the only jobs that have secure futures anymore. If you want a secured pension, civil service is the way to go. I found this out the hard way after losing my pension after a corporate merger.

I think I'm going to sign up for this. One other question, what is the work schedule like? Is like PD with 3 on 4 off, 12 hour shifts, and so on..

work schedule is 5 days 8-4, 2 days off, 5 days 4-12, 3 days off, and it repeats itself like that, hence the rotating schedule

Yup, the agility test is a joke. The details of it are on the civil service web site. The agility is the same for Nassau PD.
