A New Hyde Park firefighter was injured when he fell on a ladder spike during a practice drill Thursday night, officials said.
Around 7 p.m., Steve Mastrandrea was helping to stabilize an extension ladder against an arch at a North Hempstead park at Evergreen and Denton avenues during practice for the department's drill team, said Richard Stein, commissioner of the fire district.
Mastrandrea fell across one of the spikes that hold the ladder into the ground, and sustained a cut on his stomach, Stein said.
He was taken to North Shore- Long Island Jewish Health Systems in Manhasset, where he received sutures, Stein said.
Mastrandrea, whose age was not immediately available, has been with the volunteer department for about a year and a half. Their 20-member team, called the New Hyde Park Termites, was practicing for a competition Saturday for Long Island fire departments, Stein said.
First off, Congrats to RVC woodlanders..... Atta boys!
Secondly, Bellmore great drill, like everyone said other than the water issue it was smooth running. What many people of this board dont realize is that there was no State OF this year, Bellmore greatfully stepped up to the plate.
Third, Bellmore great efficiency run! WOW!
