Don't forget, they may be able to change the codes "on the fly". SO.... it could roll keys just like any other digital encrypted signal.

Earlier I think it was said that XTL/XTS2500 radios were being rolled out. They support encryption, but no over-the-air-rekeying.

It looks like the EX-600 XLS supports LTR and possibly Passport trunking modes much like the the CDM 1550 LS+ mobile radio does along with a large number of conventional channels as well. Public service agencies usually use other types of trunking (Smartzone, etc) so you will not be able to monitor them. Passport and LTR systems you see with businesses and so on. No encryption comes out of the box with the radio and unless there is some sort of add on board that can be installed you cannot listen to that either.

encryption "encoding" and "decoding" requires that an encryption "key" be programmed into the radio. Motorola manufactures a handheld device just for this purpose. Even if you had the device, you'd still need to know what combination of letters and numbers to type in that would become the "key."

For a system that isn't even on-line yet some people sure want to know alot about it.

The current Motorola handhelds that the PD has been using for the past 15 years are encryption capable. When they were brand new the cop using it could operate a switch on the top of the radio and go to "securenet" on channels 9 and 10. The problem with it was, if you changed the battery on the radio without shutting it off first it would lose the "key" and you had to take it to Mineola and have it re-done. That lasted about a week. Unless the new radios are "cop proof" and the encryption can't be lost by operator error, I wouldn't count on them being encrypted.

really good point. the new units can be set for "infinite key retention" so that battery removal does not result in the key being erased. I don't know that they would, i just point out that they could.

i'm pretty sure they have 17 repeater towers in the 470's now.
i was talking to someone and they said they have to have about 28 towers for their new T-Band system.

They're also planning on using XTS and XTL radios.
there goes our tax dollars...

The importance of secure and reliable mobile/portable radio service for PD/FD and EMS has been demonstrated in the past. Radio system failures 6 years ago tomorrow are case in point. There shouldn't be a price put on keeping Officers and the public safe, go whine about your tax money to someone who cares. What would be great to see with this whole project would be to see the FD get onboard and move everyone in the county to the same system...I can dream...

They will keep some for other uses (conventional analog interoperability). These channels are used by NCPD on an "exclusive" basis. That is, there are no other users in the area.

The remaining channels, which are shared with other users in the region, will be returned to the FCC. Those channels are not usable in this area. The interference NCPD endures on these channels (477.3875 is an example) was a KEY reason that they sought new channels and also a KEY reason the FCC granted their request for new channels.

I'm sure the current freqs will be around for a while as a simulcast while the transition is in effect. Look at SCPD ! ! Still have the VHF freqs in operation!

[quote=keg_254;96969]I'm sure someone, somewhere will figure out a way to "listen" to the digitally encrypted frequencies or a new scanner will come out.

Buffs a very resourceful. Back in the 30's, 40's and 50's before two way radios and scanners FDNY buffs used to climb the pole and tap into the FDNY telegraph lines and set up a bell station in there homes so they know what boxes were coming in and then buff based on the bell signals.

When I started buffing it was with a Bear Cat 5-6 crystal scanner purchased from Airex in Freeport, then digital models with direct frequency programing, add on a few two way buff radios and networks, buff pager, now new scanners, and of course the Signal 10 section of the rant.

Yes it may take some time but eventually we will be able to buff these frequencies.[/

Airex........thats a blast from the past..........
