The New York Fire Patrol (FPNY) was not affiliated with the
FDNY. Their primary function was to perform salvage operations at fire scenes where a significant amount of property was at risk. It was a private company, owned and operated by the New York Board of Fire Underwriters. The point was that if they could save enough property, the insurance companies would have to spend less to replace destroyed goods. They were started back in the early days of Manhatten's volunteer fire companies (circa 1800). Originally they patrolled the streets at night, raised the alarm if they spotted a fire, then began salvage ops. FPNY closed for good October 2006. One FP member was killed on 9/11.
I visited FP3 once in Brooklyn. Very nice guys, happy to show me around.
