Default No 2 Home Heating Oil              Go to Top

Just a scenario for all to be aware of....

...A lot of people covert from oil to gas heat. What people forget to do is cancel their Oil Delivery Contract. A lot of Plumbers will also leave the "fill spout" in place with no markings on it. So Joe Blow oil delivery guy comes to a house with no one home and dumps 500 galls of no.2 heating oil....only there's no tank, so it ends up all over the basement.

The damage is staggering and VERY expensive. You house will smell for a VERY long time. One house in Suffolk was condemned by the DEC/EPA, torn down, and they are also going after the homeowner, thats right the homeowner, for ground contamination.

The person I know that had this happen to them was lucky. First the oil company delivered to the wrong house, however he never removed the spout on the outside of his house. After roughly 500 ( could have been more but was 5 years ago.) gallons were dumped he figured something was wrong. Lucky for both the furniture and rug soaked up alot of it. Clean up crew was there for two weeks.

This Seems To Be A Common Occurance As Of Late It Used To Happen Every So Often In A Commercial Establishment Whose Overfill Alarm Was Not Operating Properly. As For The Homwowners Being Held Resposible If They Were Not Smart Enough To End There Contract With The Oil Company Nobodys Fault But Their Own.

Unfortunately it isn't always the homeowners fault as far as the contract is concerned. I worked for a local Restoration company that did A LOT of these types of jobs and a lot of the times, the homeowner had cancelled their contract with xyz oil but when xyz was bought out by abc oil, abc didn't bother to check and see which contracts were still in effect and would go and make a delivery to an old account that had changed to gas years ago. As far as removing the spout of rthe oil, that would be one of the first things I would remove so something like this wouldn't happen. Live and learn.......
