I came across a NYPD ride along program that lets you ride along in a patrol car for two hours. You can chose almost any precinct I believe. You can also ride with your friends. You only need to be 18 with ID.
Ive had to take ride alongs in the car w/ us...it sucks...we dont know who you are, where youre really from and what your intentions are...basically youll sit in the car and watch me eat a sandwhich, read the paper and then make fun of people we see walk by the car....maybe if you get lucky youll get to go on a radio run which, there will be an 15% chance of us even getting out of the car for....
Hate to sound like a dick, i cant speak for everyone but i know me and my partner arent going to get in to anything while we've got someone riding along with us who we dont know or trust.
Our bosses were wise and always sent the ride alongs with the laziest sector. For that reason, they are used to doing nothing and will continue on that path without resistance. Nozzle is 100% right...who is the person, what are they about, why are they there and whats the outcome if we did get involved ? too many whats to even have a decent time. The only one I ever had ( and you think they are all bad) was a crime reporter from Newsday who was doing a series on NYPD Detectives. He rode with us for 2 tours, we were doing a homicide investigation, assisted patrol on a robbery canvass for a pattern and rolled up on 2 schmucks who fit the description....stopped, tossed...2 knives and a hammer and proceeds...he wrote us up like we had parted the red sea...from there on in, he helped us with anything we needed....yes, from NEWSDAY ! Most of the regular ride alongs are snooty college liberals, who wanna brag that they faced danger in the eyes and that its not so bad and you dont wanna get caught in a pinch with them in the back....and your definately not trolling the projects looking for fun....
Alot of times CCRB will send a ride along, so needless to say i got stuck w/ this women who was very friendly, i forget where she was from, some where mid-west...anyway, she had no idea what the hood was like, and couldnt understand what we do...well that night, not by choice but by necessity, she got to see it first hand....first we had a violent EDP who took 5 heavy hitters to restrain, once all was said and done i found her hiding in the bathroom of the house from the fight....she was terrified LOL... an hour after that she got to see a DOA from a gun shot in the street, and then the ensuing crowd condition, fighting and 7 collars from the crowd.
Im actually glad that she did see all this so that she might spread the word to the other CCRB cvnts that, the police are not always the people starting the fight, as was the case w/ both things she witnessed
