How many jobs has your department or company caught, with the job not being in your district, whether it be in the neighboring district where lines get messy or whatever?
Valley Stream Engine 3 was first due to a job in North Mass while heading to fire school, teh chiefs had to have loved that call from teh acdemy saying where is your engine.....
When i was in n mass i was on the first due engine for that fire that valley stream was at ..the brothers from valley stream engine three got a lot of fire duty at this fire
There was a fire some years back where one department was alerted for a building fire, that was within feet of their district line, yet just out of their district. The members knew they had 'job' because of the dispatch information and some members had to drive past the fire to get the firehouse. A very questionable decision on the chief's part - he put all of his units on a signal 6, and then had the other department (who's district it was) alerted. Maybe he was afraid of having to deal with the fallout of assumed/expected firehouse politics, who know's? None the less, once the department who's fire district; the fire was in was notified, that department immediately requested the department who had been originally dispatched, to send an engine and a ladder on mutual aid.
Last year, the Bethpage Fire Department was notified for a Building Fire.Hicksville road (South Broadway) and Bloomingdale I believe. Moment later Hicksville toned it out for Lewis And South Broadway. They were there first, and called the 10, but it was outside of there district so they held with 1&1 to assist. Very big ops, big job.
the call was recieved as Broadway & Lewis St. After the fact, it was realized that there are 2 intersections that could match. Broadway and Louis or Broadway & Lewis, one being Bethpage District and one being Hicksville District. It was believed to be the Bethpage one at first and toned out as such...little dispatcher note...this is why you should always go for a landmark or a spelling on the street if you do not have a numerical to work with...Luckily the two are in close proximity and units were there to do their job without delay.
About a month or two ago, Tally-Ho (423) took in a house fire in Valley Stream. For those who don't know the VS line is across the street from us, so we were hangin out on a typical Sunday morning detail and we saw smoke down the block, the chief was at our house and advised us to take it in, we called valley stream, then responded. We, along with VS eng 2 ironically our sister company, were first due. Lynbrook Truck (427) heard us going out so they also responded. Fortunately it worked out well, we let Eng. 2 run the show and we worked along side them, everyone cooperated and got it out quickly
it's happens quite often between Inwood and LC..i would take a stab at it that the best block for fires is the border of the districts (Lawrence Ave) in my time i could recall about 5 jobs that were toned out for one dept and happened to be on the others side...regardless of which side it is on upon transmission of a signal 10 in either district your getting 1E/1L from the other dept on M/A automatically...
Years ago, there was a fire at the Denton Deli in Garden City Park. Denton Avenue is the border between GCP and New Hyde Park. Someone pulled NHP's alarm box across the street, and they were in first.
I would imagine districts with alarm boxes get alot of calls along their borders like that...the average joe certainly doesn't know or care about the borders.
1995 or 96 we got called for a "vicinity of..." fire near Lakeview Public Library behind Tanglewood Preserve. The back of the property at that time was in Lakeview's district but the vacant bldg that was burning wound up being in Lynbrook's. [about 200 ft. outside our district]
We responded in and our Chief notified Lynbrook that we were operating in their district. Their chief then transmitted a general alarm. By the time Lynbrook got there we had the nickel-and-dime-fire under control.

hey sillimanco you wrote "For those who don't know the VS line is across the street from us"and "We, along with VSFD Engine 2 ironically our sister company" there's a very interesting story about your firehouse that at one time it use to be VSFD Engine 2's firehouse but there was only one little problem, it was in the Village of Lynbrook so many years ago Tally-Ho kept the firehouse and Valley Stream got the engine and moved to Brooklyn Av firehouse, it's good to hear you guys still get along so well...
dont know if this counts but IP L223 caught a tool job a few years back infront of the 7-11 by the FSA (believe its farmingdale) on the way back from fireschool. ford bronko rear ended one of freeports engines that was parked on the sidewalk. wound up putting our tool to work by the orders of the farmindale chief who got there within seconds
why not ?? does it only have to be a fire job?? putting your tool to work on an extrication in someone else district without technically being called should count as something
