Default "Panic" Training              Go to Top

One thing that doesnt seem to get instilled in (new) brothers enough lately is "Panic" training.....

... Simply put, you will suck down a bottle a lot quicker in a "panic" mode situation. But, if you can regulate your breathing and actions, your chance of survival is a lot greater, and your bottle will last longer.

Too many brothers have sustained injuries by "panicing"... ripping their facepieces off an taking a nasty feed, etc.....

There are some simple, non-lethal/non-illegal ways you can train people to control their breathing under stressful situations. NONE involve "live" fire, so, in essence, nothing will "compare" to the "real deal", but, it may give someone an extra few minutes til the calvary arrives....

...Blackout Mask w/SCBA on + entanglement--- A key hook or carabiner and rope to part of the back of someone's SCBA as they're affecting a search in a dark room. Do it in a basement/room with the lights off. See how someone reacts- will the find their knife or remove their pack????

...."The Maze"... If you use a search maze, switch a wall or two here & there, and entrap someone in a 3 x 3 area. No lights, blackout mask....

... "Slim Win"... Reduced Profile- See how many people can actually do one effectively- Vertically or Horizontally. Those that cant will suck down a bottle real quick.

These are just a few things. There are 8 million more.

We operate in a dark, superheated environment. The quicker someone learns that, the quicker they'll learn how to survive.

MFD all of the situations you have in yor post are done to every memeber of this dept in our Dept. orientaion class with One added we have them first see what its like to actually suck a bottle dry..this is done fully geared and in the light (usally have them running laps in the parking lot). They get to feel the viber alert activate and the shut off at this point we have them count there breaths until they suck the bottle to there face. It has been working out well for us. We see alot less "panic" when we send them through the maze and throw those other scenarios at them.

True but training members in what to expect and how to deal with situations will help god forbid it happens in real life. Thats why we (the fire service) trains.

I did a drill a few times. I drained the bottles to right before the viberalert goes off, then hook them. I really gave a few guys an eyeopener on how to conserve air, and that you still have a desent amount of air when the vibalert activates as long as you breath slowly and through your nose
