Don't these guys have some sort of security? It would be fairly easy to pick these guys off and respond considering you have the highest point for miles around, someone is always on radar watch and you have NV and probly thermal imaging capabilities...

Commercial ships typically have a crew of 20 people to 30 people tops...There is the Captain, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd mates, and then an AB or OB (able bodied seaman or ordinary seaman) assigned to each officer...these are the people that steer the ship, plot the course and decided where to go...aka the deck department. Then there is the Chief Engineer, 1st, 2nd, 3rd engineers, each assigned an oiler to help them. These are the people that provide the power to the ship as well as all the other stuff, such as desalinized water, electricity, hvac etc...aka the engine department.

After that there are a few other posistions such as cooks and stewards (maids)....thats it. These commercial ships are not like what you see on tv with large naval vessels with a crew of hundreds or thousands......The less people working on the ship the more money the company makes. There is radar and sonar and gps and loran c among other things on board, but just because you get a blip on the radar doesnt mean you can identify what it is. (asides from land or weather on the radar) Most ships dont have any fire arms on them, and even if so its no match to automatic weapons or RPG's.

Also they mentioned on the news about the ships speeding up to avoid attack, it takes a shit load of energy to increase the speed on a ship of this size, its not like your 21' boston whaler ....and it takes MILES to bring one to a complete stop from such a speed, which usually isnt greater then 30 knots. And just because theres room to speed up, the ship has to look at whats beyond them to make sure they can manuver and stop with out collision or running aground. not to mention that most smaller boats the pirates are on can out run the ship even at full steam.

The bottom line is that something needs to be done and fast in order to put these savages in thier place. Like TR said..Speak softley and carry a big stick.

Long Island-based ship attacked by pirates, officials sayBY ZACHARY R. DOWDY | zachary.dowdy@newsday.com
11:36 PM EDT, April 14, 2009

The Liberty Sun, a ship based in Lake Success, NY, was attacked about 300 miles off the coast of Somalia. (Liberty Maritime Corp Photo / April 14, 2009)

Somali pirates fired rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons at a Long Island-owned vessel traveling through perilous waters off the Horn of Africa, officials said Tuesday.

The American ship carrying humanitarian aid, Liberty Sun, was damaged but the ship and crew called for help and were escorted by the U.S. Navy, said officials at the Lake Success-based company, Liberty Maritime Corp.

"We are grateful and pleased that no one was injured, and the crew and the ship are safe," said the company in a statement issued last night. "We have communicated with the families of the crew to inform them of these developments. We commend the entire crew for its professionalism and poise under fire."

A U.S. Central Command spokesman said the vessel reported being attacked around 11:30 a.m. New York time.

Map: ship hijacked Graphic Liberty Maritime Corp. officials said the ship was en route from Houston to Mombasa, Kenya, carrying American food for African nations suffering from famine.

Katy Urbik of Wheaton, Ill., said her son, Thomas, was aboard the Liberty Sun at the time of the attack, CNN.com reported last night. She shared the e-mails he sent as the ship came under fire.

"We are under attack by pirates, we are being hit by rockets. Also bullets," said one e-mail sent Tuesday afternoon.

About 1 1/2 hours later, Thomas Urbik sent another e-mail to his mother, which said, "The navy has showed up in full force and we are now under military escort. . . . All is well."

The military spokesman, Navy Capt. Jack Hanzlik, said the vessel has a crew of about 20.

One company executive, Dale Moses, executive vice president and chief financial officer, declined to comment on the incident last night.

Kanzlik said the USS Bainbridge sailed to the scene and reported upon arriving at 5:30 p.m. that the pirates had left, and that there were no injuries.

"Liberty Maritime's first priority has been, and will continue to be, ensuring that the crews aboard our ships are safe," said the company's statement. "We want to especially thank the U.S. Navy for its prompt response to our request for assistance."

The Liberty Sun is continuing on its way to Mombasa.

The incident comes one week after another U.S. ship, the Maersk Alabama, was attacked in the same area. That ship's captain, Richard Phillips, was taken hostage by three pirates who were later shot dead by Navy SEAL snipers after negotiations for his release broke down.

Well, obviously the ship is NEVER there. The sentence should have said 'registered in Lake Success, NY' not 'based in Lake Success, NY' which brings me back to my original point...Newsday sucks.

Kill 'em all and let G_d sort 'em out....I think that pretty much sums it up!!

Enough is enough, this isn't the 1600's, 1700's etc. Sometimes you just need to kick ass and take names and this is one of them. Bleeding heart liberals....they are the proverbial "last nail in the coffin" of this country!!!

the problem with putting weapons on board is its written somewhere (geneva convention i think) if weapons are on board it becomes a military vessel which makes it subject to search and not allowed free entry into ports like standard commercial vessels

its funny how the enemy never follows the rules...in any type of situation...war, crime, terrorism....yet the only people that continue to follow the rules are the victims....well screw the geneva convention.....these skinnies arent abiding by it, so why should we...hollow points and .50 cal rifles to be used against people, not machinery, and i think it will slow them down.
