Hey Guys,
Found the following situation at a recent fire in our district (East Farmingdale). I am going to precursor the info with how we came across the situation...
On 2/24/09 East Farmingdale responded to 280 Rte 109 for a major commerical fire. The fire building was an approx 200' x 100 commerical with heavy fire throughout, building was a total loss. 280 Rte 109 was attatched to 270 Rte 109 on the #4 side of the building. 270 is a Bath / Shower Company with a small office in the front, and a warehouse in the rear, that stores showers/tubs ect. for installs. The fire in 280 left the entire roof saging, it was a metal truss roof with significant failures. The roof for 270's warehouse is attached to 280's roof and had some damage to the truss system.. not as major as 280's, but damaged truss is no good no matter what as we all know...
On 5/7 East Farmingdale responded to 270 Rte 109 for another working fire. The fire was a contents fire with minimal damage in the rear warehouse of 270. Knowng the previous history of the fire building, minimal man power was commited to 270's interior ops. After ventilation clear the smoke condition the following was found in 270's warehouse:

That is regular wood, probably bought at home depot and cut with a table saw, setup as box cribing. The wood was placed along the wall closest to the 280 building, where the roof saging and major truss compromise had started. This was done in-house, by someone assosciated with the 270 building, most likely to keep the business operational, with the employees feeling "safe". This is the stuff out there that will kill us guys and girls. We have to be proactive in our building inspections. Use rescue calls to help get a peek into buildings while others are doing patient care. If one piece of wood had been shifted or altered, there could have been major problems.
I wanted to
pass this along. Hopefully it opens the eyes of all of us to show what these skells who do not have a clue about anything are doing out there.
Please be safe, and keep you eyes open.
FYI: This building has been deemed exterior only attack, no matter how small the fire, Auth Chiefs Office, EFFD.
Risk a little to save a little, Risk alot to save alot, Risk nothing to save nothing.
See you guys on the fire floor.
Jay (EFFD 182)
