Best thing to do is just set them up with scenarios. For example: Tell them they get toned out for a chest pain. They get off the bus and have them recite what they need to do prior to entrance of the house (BSI, Scene safety, bags to bring in, PCR). Have them bring the stuff with them (preferably a photocopy PCR). They enter the room where the pt is (have an actual pt sitting on a chair/couch/whatever the scenario requires). Let them ask the questions (OPQRSTI, SAMPLE), take the vitals, apply O2, write down the info and so on. Then let them either verbalize or preferably actually take the pt out of the room via stair chair or other method and have them use the stretcher and load them into the amb.
What is also very impt. but generally overlooked is the hospital setting. Signing a pt. in and talking to charge nurse. Show them how to do simple things like raise hosp. beds and transfer a pt. over. Also, very impt is to show them where to take the pt. within the hosp. it is not some innate sense people possess. It takes some time to get used to but this is the best way to do it. This method also allows for the
EMT to be more confident with his/her skills and be more calm on a call.
