That being said, just because you are off probation and have a few years in a fire department DEFINITELY does NOT mean that you are so much more knowledgeable than a junior member. I am more active than most members at my firehouse and I still don't feel that I have all of this experience under my belt. I see people in my department that love to tell more stories than Mother Goose but have never done anything in all their "years" in the fire department. I leave you all with a saying that I am sure that some of you are familiar with: RESPECT IS EARNED, NOT DEMANDED.

In my department us probies are equal members, till the cleaning upstairs after a meal. But then if there's an unusual amount everyone pitches in. The guy who usually cooks at company meetings cleans a long the way to help us out. Yes we do get our balls busted, here and there. But most try to teach us something. We have a couple ex-chiefs, the baby chief, and LT that really put forth the effort to make sure we will have master every rig including our band-aid box.

OOS, i have to disagree with your comments. My 3 line officers are all in their 20's and have my respect as well as the respect of the other probies, young or not.

I hate to drudge up old posts,

but as a probie (been in about a year now) i just want to say that the best guys to learn from are the guys that actively teach, not the guys that just expect us to catch on to whatever their doing, or break our balls but don't help us better ourselves.
I just wanted to say this because in the long run, if I'm a better firefighter, everybody is better off.

just a side note to that: how do you feel about the "Super probie"- the guy who's still a probie after 2 or 3 years, but acts like he knows more than all the other probies who have actually taken or are in the process of taking firefighter 1 or EMT-B?

Because we (the other probies) bust his balls like he's one of us, but he thinks he's so much more experienced/ knowledgeable that he can act like he's a member.

Not for nothing, but there's no such thing as a 2-3 year probie in my department. Unless there's an overriding reason (medical, military leave, etc) someone like that would be shown the door long before then.
