An elderly man died in a house fire in Queens on Monday night as firefighters battled flames and what they called cluttered, Collyers’ Mansion conditions.

The man, identified by neighbors as Henry Ward, was found dead in a back bedroom of his two-story wood house at 111-32 143rd Street near 111th Avenue, fire officials said.

The Fire Department was called about 8 p.m., fire officials said. The house was consumed by fire from the front to the back on both floors, fire officials said.

Deputy Chief Paul Ferro said the fire was difficult to fight because of the conditions inside the house and the instability of the house’s frame. Mr. Ferro said that once firefighters got inside, they were confronted by major clutter and debris strewn throughout the home.

Soon after firefighters got the blaze under control, they found Mr. Ward’s body.

Neighbors described Mr. Ward as quiet and reclusive.

”You seldom see him,” said Rod Scott, a neighbor. “He comes out every once in a while. I feel bad for him to go out like this.”

Mr. Scott said that Mr. Ward was known around the neighborhood for the eccentric manner in which he decorated the outside of his home.

The front of the white house was covered by dozens of signs paying homage to African-American culture in America. They praise African-American scientists, doctors, inventors and many of their widely used inventions.

One sign, made of white oak tag and painted with red letters, hung over the entryway into Mr. Ward’s yard.

It noted the shortage of places where African-American history was celebrated outdoors, and introduced some of the black inventors as being “produced from brilliant genius” minds of the children of slaves.

Another neighbor, Edith Koffi, said she believed Mr. Ward was a veteran. She said she often ran into him at the local library.
