FDNY firefighters battled a three alarm blaze on a construction platform below the Throgs Neck bridge in Queens early Friday morning. Water supply and access to the fire were main concerns of arriving units.
Special Operations Units were brought in from all over the city to provide assistance. FDNY fire boats used their master streams to help extinguish the fire from below.
Traffic on the bridge was closed in both directions for a while and traffic in the area was snarled for hours.

Funny you mention that. Was standing with the boys from L129 and was going to take a pic with the sign in the background...but didn't want to rub it in!

reports were that the fire actually melted a large steel construction plate above.....I would hope a contents fire would not weaken that thing...but I hope whoever is checking it is on their game...with 110k vehicles a day, could you imagine that coming down...?

Engine 295 was originally assigned by themselves for rubbish / black smoke under the bridge. The new 911 system is great........ 1 Engine response to what turned into a 3rd alarm, and you get 3 and 2 and a Chief for a disabled veichle.
