Just picked up a Radio Shack Pro-2018 off Ebay for dirt Cheap.
...It is now replacing a Uniden BCT15....
..A scanner that cost me under $50 blows away a $250.00 BCT15....
..."Shit Shack" or Realistic- I've owned about 30 of them over the last 27 years. Besides 1 or 2 handhelds that went through hell, all have met or exceeded my expectations.
I'm not "technically proficient" in the scanner field, and maybe someone can offer assistance, but are RS scanners made w/Uniden parts?
Also decided to get rid of the Uniden BCT-7.
Keeping my 2 BC 350A's & the BC72XLT as they've met "my standards"
(And PS-I'm not an RS fan at all and think they will be outta biz in a few years)
I'm a big fan of my RS pro-93....it may be replaced soon, as it's been getting older it's gotten a little weaker. My being in the FD has turned my father into a buff, so got him a RS pro-97 last fathers day, also a great scanner.
Also own an old Realistic/RS pro-77 crystal base scanner. Old, but still works well.
The BCT-15 & BCD996T are far more advanced than the old typical scanners and believe me many ppl hate that they cant work them as easily as they are used to. Once you learn them you'll never wanna leave them.
The 996 has one holy hell of a learning curve. When I first got it I had NO IDEA how to get it to work. W2LIE had to hook me up and show me how to do it. I'd say I can use only about 40% of the capabilities of this scanner and it is still awesome. It programs via laptop, and can scan almost anything out there. I scan the local PD, FD, EMS, as well as the entire Dept of Defense SE Region, which is a full digital P25 system. Crystal clear. I love it.
I bought the small Radio Shack(forgot the model) CB to fit in the roof console of my truck with minor adjustment, and it works great even with my roof mounted stubby antennas. If I can locate my CB amp it'd be great with 2 wilson 5000s
What would you guys recomend as the best handheld scanner for INSIDE the house that I can bring to the living room when the wife isn't home, or when she is and I can annoy her. I've been using a "wireless" speaker in the LR connected to my base scanner in the den, but that speaker is meant for outdoors and even by my standards it's too big and really unsightly.
Solutions guys? What scanner will work best, especially with Nassau's size and low VHF still being used.
I recommend the Uniden BC246T.
But keep in mind that NCPD may be switching over to APCO 25, and the new scanner you purchased will not be good for NCPD unless they stay on their UHF frequency.
Some scanners, Like the PRO-2051, are a Uniden scanner, but with GRE programming. Others, Like the PRO-2052, are true Uniden scanners. That scanner even talks using the Uniden programming language.
