Default Scholarship              Go to Top

Is everyone aware of the NYS Higher Education Services Corp scholarship that seems like it is available for one member of each volunteer FD per year. Looks like it could be a sh-tload of money for school for many of ours and this is the first time I have ever heard about it.

Seems like they will give till they run out of money for the year and if they have more people than money they pick out of a hat.

Qualifications:
-Volly Fire or EMS
-Enrolled in approved undergrad program in NYS
-at least 6 credits per term
-23 or older fewer than 6 months in the co. under 23 no min or max time
-not a college grad
-Attending a college within 50 miles of your dept or giving service to where you are (need an exception & there are more rules)
-High School diploma
-Have applied for state & federal aid
-Maintain good academic standing ("C" avg)
-Stay active member
-Stay in school
-File for state & financial aid

If you have any questions, dont ask me as I am just the messenger. If you need a copy of the application, PM me your email address & I will send.

Unfortunately this program has fallen under the ax of the bean counters. 4 years ago I received full tuition to SCC, a young guy in my dept. just applied and received a mere 500$, enough to cover books. It really was a great program but shouldn't be used to recruit members on that notion alone(a free ride to SCC, NCC, etc.) The whole thing makes me sick to my stomach that they would cut the funding to this program...

Are you sure of that? I was on their web site not long ago and I read that they will pay up to the full tuition for a SUNY School. That is the max, it would be less if their were any other awards or loans.

In other words: SUNY tuition amount - loans or grants = Amount of this benefit

Here is the link to the web page. See the last section titled "Award Payment."

http://www.hesc.com/content.nsf/SFC/...ce_Scholarship

"Awards will equal the amount of tuition, reduced by any tuition-based grant, but can not exceed the amount of tuition charged by the State University of New York."
