I would much rather have a system that promotes the fact that you can have 3 different neighboring departments in the same battalion that operate with 3 different types of hose, scba's and radio frequency's. Unbelievable that someone could think they could improve a system that hasn't changed in almost 100 years. What could possibly have changed in those 100 years? I am no fan of Liz Moore or Newsday, but open your eyes and see the big picture.

You are absolutely right....there is so much redundancy in this county its ridiculous. Some kind of reform is needed. Think about this....
Let's compare Nassau to the boro of Queens.
Queens has approximately 50 fire houses, so figure about 50 engines and 40 ladders, being there are about 10 single engine houses (only one single ladder house - L116). 1 heavy rescue and a handful of other support units.
Fire Statistics about this boro: (2007)
5,166 Report of Structural Fires
4,375 Report of Non-Structural
38,572 Non-Fire emergencies
42,900 EMS runs
6,151 Malicious False alarms
Total of 677 10-75 or higher. (signal 10's)
Queens has a population of 2.2 Million
Nassau has a population of 1.3 Million
Think about Nassau's Numbers....
71 Departments... Under 300 Signal 10's (2007 stats).
I can't even begin to fathom how many engines, ladders, and heavy rescues.
Probably over 250 engines, over 100 ladders, and probably over 50 heavy rescues. What a waste, we don't even have the manpower to staff these units.
