We're discussing Stethoscpe Diaphrams: Corrugated or Flat
Re: Stethoscpe Diaphrams: Corrugated or FlatGo to Top
Best Scope I ever used was the Littmann Master Cardiology III, I owned one, it was stolen :sigh:. That had a Flat Diaphragm. From what I hear the 3M Littmann Master Cardiology is even better then that! And that also has a Flat Diaphragm.
Moral of the Story? Flat some times is better.
On the Littmann Master Cardiology III, the one I did use (and own), if my patients could have wheezing in their toes I'd be able to hear it even when auscultating their lungs plus I'd be able to tell you it's coming from their toes.

Littmann uses a technology called a tunable diaphragm this allows the user to hear different sounds, that are produced by different frequencies by applying different levels of pressure to the scope. Littmann's in general have very good sound quality that allows for the provider to be able to hear very well. One thing to keep in mind is that the scope is only as good as the tech using it.
Personally I do not see a reason that an EMT needs a cardiology III or master cardiology but if they wish to spend the money they will have a professional level stethoscope that will last them a long time if they treat it right. The master classic has very good sound quality but has a independent bell and diaphragm in place of the tunable diaphragm. This scope is relatively cheep and provides very good sound quality for BP'S and lung sounds...
another great source for info on using these types of scopes is Bob pages web site 'Multi lead medics'

for a little extra money a master classic would most likely make you much happier in the long run... The sound is much, much better.... and questions just ask.

Anyone try this? Played with one the other day, seemed like a great stethoscope, especially for the price. Believe its the ADC 603 Stainless Steel Stethoscope - EM265 : Galls
