It might have bwwn a Mystic truck. I was home and got called in for the tow. I was riding in the '79 Autocar with an old timer. We left that one for a garbage truck that rolled onto its side in Centre Island. The driver of the garbage truck escaped but died after walking to the homeowners house to make a call for help. He was also a Bayville firefighter.
[quote=Blue Mule Trucking;246700]There was a tanker accident at Glen Cove Road and Hillside Avenue. Who responded and when exactly was it. I think I remember hearing it was early 90s.[/QU
It was in the late 70's early 80's. I was living on the North Shore, and I remember it being on a Saturday morning with an Island Transportation rig, and I moved to the South Shore in 83. It was in the area between Hillside Ave and Jericho Turnpike on Glen Cove Road. It was directly across from where the Sea Crest Diner is located.

Wasn't that the accident that the tanker driver was burnt to death?

It was definitely Island. Mystic(now I think alternative fuels or anchor) had something else in the same area not as serious.

They weren't known for hiring the cream of the crop then. They had to clean up after that. I think driving age there is higher like 27 due to their high rate of accidents. I applied there when I was 23 and didn't get it because of age.
We use to call Island Transport the Night Flyers.
They were getting paid for the loads they were hauling.
Very dangerous.
That's how most of those guys got paid back then. Today it's hourly, miles and still by the loads. Mostly by the load locally is the sandbox's which you see doing well over 65 in the wee hours.
