We're discussing Tropical Activity possible headed this way
Tropical Activity possible headed this wayGo to Top
I am a weather buff as well and these guys were really on target with Gustave and Ike and they are concerned for Long Island with this one.....Looks like this weekend if it comes to fruition.....
From the Accuweather Forums:
From user mike18xx:
The models are predicting a type of storm fairly similar to the "Long Island Express" -- a storm that slants up a negatively-tilted trough along the southwest side of high pressure to the northeast, rather than recurving.
From WhitePlainsNYBlizzard:
So far the Monday's 00Z model suite:
00Z GFS; glancing blow to eastern Long Island. southeastern New England including Cape Cod and then down east Maine.
00Z GFDL; a direct Mid-Atlantic hit around northern Delmarva/Southern New Jersey; 956MB CAT3 hurricane, with Philadelphia and New York City on target for the northeast quadrant.
00Z HWRF; a direct Mid-Atlantic hit around southern Delmarva; 960MB CAT3 hurricane, with Philadelphia and NYC on target for the northeast quadrant.
WHOA!!!
126 hours out, last frame:
CAT3 hurricane landfall somewhere around southern New Jersey...

Not going to happen. The spread on those models is so wide, and by the time it reaches LI it'll be a CAT1, tops. Remember that "Tropical Storm" we got a few weeks ago? What a joke.

Would be a shame - the Mets have lots planned for Sunday. (Yankees did a great job last night, and I am definitely NOT a Yankee fan). Hopefully they will have clinched, at least the wild card, by Sunday. (What would they do if the game is cancelled, but meaningless in terms of playoffs? They usually don't play those games - Saturday could end up being the last game).

This weekend was the 70th anniversary of the "Long Island Express" aka the hurricane of 1938 which killed 50 people. They called it the Long Island Express for several reasons one being that the forward speed of the hurricane was about 70 mph. The storm made it from the bahamas to Long Island in less than a day.

Even a category 1 storm on Long Island often will have the same effect as a Cat 2 down south because of the forward movement and speed of the storm. Being prepared is something that all Long Islanders should do NOW. This is a peak time of year for tropical systems. Disregarding information that is available is foolish, especially if you live by the water. Lets hope this doesn't happen, but history has said that it will, and we are quite overdue!

What is the name of the storm?
I would imagine they'd play the next day. All I know is that the tickets cost a fortune, and I will be very....unhappy if it gets rained out. Do you know what they have planned in terms of festivities?
