I am seeing this alot... Many firefighters are not trying to open the door simply by pulling on the handle, and using hydraulic tools when not needed..some doors even though badly dented will open with a yank or two.
-- try yanking on the door handle 1st
-- when popping a door always have someone hold the handle/button till its open, or stuff a tennis ball under it
-- try prying with a halligan and other hand tools before going crazy with hydraulics
-- if possible, get the hood open before pinching a fender, preventing more difficulties if need to get under hood
-- pinch the fender about a foot in front of the doors to gain access to door hinges
-- when displacing a dash make sure you or a spotter keeps an eye on the steering wheel, as in some vehicles if the dash goes up the column moves down.
-- easiest way to pop a trunk is to spread between the top of bumper and just underneath the lock mechanism( the license plat cut out in the center)
-- try to keep glass breaking to a minimum .
-- ALWAYS were safety glasses/goggles/mask and gloves when working around an extrication.
-- shoud always have some sort of water source ready in case of fire
-- always try to pop the hood from where its meant to be popped from, the handle inside.
-- on most vehicles you can pop the hood by spreading between top of front bumper and underneath center of hood.
-- if the hoods that much of a pain in the ass you could bend/pry up the driver side corner ( w/ axe, halligan, hand tools) locate the cable going from the inside release handle to the latch mechanism, pull it out as much as possible, stick a halligan on the inside of cable and pry off of fender or what you can, the hood will pop.
-- a little lengthy in time but if you mask off most of a door window with duck tape before breaking it, this will keep most of the glass from falling on your pt
-- ALWAYS think youll get hurt if you touch anything on the car, this way you will be more aware of whats going on and noone gets hurt, there are hundreds of ways to get hurt at an extrication
thats it for now, be safe all!!
