I was recently issued new morning pride turn out gear.....its absolutly comfortable and i love it.....BUTTTT the question i have for everyone is, and it obviously dont have to be JUST that brand of gear.
On the jacket, there is this big piece of fabric made to velcro over your neck and up to your chin......Its pretty bulky and i dont know if i like it yet, it wasnt that comfortable and it almost seemed redundant since w/ the top clip in place its pretty high up anyway, and then w/ my hood on it leaves nothing exposed
im just curious, do most of you use it, do most of you velcro it around the back of your collar, do you cut it off ( im NOT going to do that dont worry chief) Im just basically curious to know what the general thoughts are on it.
find the stitching and take a razor to it, they won't even notice it's missing. Another grand idea from our corn huskers at NFPA. Every time my gear is sent out they sew a new piece on and every time i get it back it comes off forthwith. Job security for Minerva.
The hood does not always cover everything up, and i know people say you should feel a little heat etc, but Turtle up when your on the Nozzle...Everyones expecting you to keep that line in place, and you shouldnt let anyhting get in the way of that........
I would definetly leave it on your coat, it was designed to be there for a specific reason, and usually only after somebody has already gotten injured or even worse killed without it.
That flap can be velcroed to the back of your collar and folded under it or it can be folded in half and velcroed to the right side of your collar as well. If you completely turtle up, after turning up your collar you need this flap to close the front of the top part of your coat above the clasps. If the collar is too much for you when it is popped when you turtle up, you can fold it down, almost halfway. Depending on the hood that you have, like JOHNNYPUMP39 said, your might not be fully protected in the area right above your chest and near your shoulders. I'd leave the flap in place and just try to get used to it. If it bothers you too much and you never want to use it, keep it velcroed to the back of your collar and out of the way. If you do use it, the white part of flap should be facing your chin.
If your hood is on right and up all the way and you have the top button and clasp of your coat fastened, you should be okay 9 times out of 10. But having that flap is a little extra reassurance.
For argument sake, you pull up to a scene and there is light smoke at the windows maybe your just going to go with the hood and leave the collar down, your preference. Now when you roll up on a scene like the one we had at Dartmouth, you might want to not only turtle up completely and use that flap, but also take an extra second and check give yourself a once over.
