Type 2 ambulances and generally modified vans, and they are great for tight streets, and general transports, but they do not have the room in the rear that type 1 or 3's do. Also Where cost is the bottom line, type 2's are the least expensive... In a volunteer, or 9-1-1 service where you are dealing with serious medical and trauma patients, you want to have room to work on a critical patient and you want to be able to get around other providers that are in the rear of the unit working with you... so again a type 2 is a little cramped compared to the other options. Also if you want to transport more than 1 patient, a type 1 or 3 is better.
Type 1 is a little more rugged than a type 3 becasue a type 1 is a truck chassis with a box mounted on it.. a benefit of that is that when the engine and chassis die, you can remove the rear box and if it is in good condition remount it on a brand new chassis and get another 5-10 years out of the box. A type 3 is a van chassis with a enlarged box on it. Because of the suspension of an indepedent box, NYC exclusivly uses type 1's they say they are more rugged and they get at least 10 years out of them.
Having worked in a 3 types of ambulances in 9-1-1 units, I like the type 1 or 3 best, the type 2 is O.K. but in my opinion too cramped for many patients..
Another thing about the type 1 that is grat, you can carry a patient down in a stair chaird, and then lift the whole chair into the rear of the bus, and transfer the patient to the stretcher.... you can do this in some type 3's but you cant do that in a type 2 van,,,
Just my opinion for over 25 years in EMS.
