Where are the positions located?
This is a nationwide announcement. Positions may be filled at any port throughout the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii), Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam. Positions may be filled at any CBP port of entry within the states/locations listed on the page titled "Geographic Location Codes". We have an urgent need for CBP Officers in Arizona; Andrade/Calexico, California; Los Angeles, California; San Francisco, California; Michigan; Maine; Montana; North Dakota; Texas (East), Vermont; Washington (Northern Border) and Washington (all other). Applicants who select a geographic preference in one of the aforementioned urgent need locations will have a greater chance of being referred and selected for a CBP Officer position.
Information you should know before registering for the written test:
1. In accordance with Public Law 110-161, this position is covered under special retirement provisions for Customs and Border Protection Officers; therefore, candidates must be referred for selection for this position before reaching their 37th birthday. This age restriction may not apply if you are serving or have served in a federal civilian (not military) law enforcement position covered by Title 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) or Title 5 U.S.C. 8412(d).
2.If you took the CBP Officer examination within the last twelve months and received an eligible rating, your test results are still valid and you are not allowed to retest under this announcement, but you must re-register to continue to be considered for the position. Follow the instructions given during the registration process.
3. If you took the CBP Officer examination and received an ineligible (IA) rating, you must wait one year from the date on your Notice of Results to re-register and test.
4. If you took and passed the CBP Officer examination more than twelve months ago and wish to retest under this announcement, you must complete the entire registration. If you retest and your test score is lower than your previous test score, the lower test score will prevail.
5. If you have already been tentatively selected for a CBP Officer position and you reapply under this announcement and subsequently are referred for a position under a different geographic location, your new referral and selection will supercede your previous selection's geographic location.
What types of positions are being filled? CBP Officer positions are full-time positions and are being filled under the Federal Career Intern Program (FCIP) appointing authority. The FCIP is a program that helps Federal agencies recruit talented individuals for entry-level government positions. FCIP appointments are designed with a 2-year internship, during which time you'll be learning the job and the organization, attending formal training programs and developing your skills. If your performance and conduct are satisfactory, your appointment will be made permanent at the end of the 2-year internship. The FCIP is an "excepted service" appointing authority.
